Bought the Uly in Jan 07. It came with the Buell tall windscreen installed. The windscreen has 4 plastic pop in studs. From I what I've read in older posts, there was a safety recall that replaced the bottom 2 plastic pins with bolts.

I had the bike at another dealer closer to my house this past Saturday to have the BAS recall performed. I asked about the windscreen recall but no one had ever heard of it. They found nothing in their computer about it. So, I called Buell CS yesterday and they said there was indeed a recall. They gave me the bulletin number but little other information. Said I should pass the bulletin number on to the dealer.

Before I take it back in, I'd like to know if my bike has the kit. From what I've read, I don't think so. Anyone wish to straighten me out? Thanks.

If your bike already has the kit, the bottom two push pins will be bolts instead. You can't miss it.

Thanks Sanchez. That's the info I was looking for. Looks like I'll have to take it back to the dealer again.

Windscreen problem solved, Sort of.

After speaking with Buell CS, I called the local dealer and gave the service manager the information pertaining to the recall. He told me I would have to bring the bike by the dealership and look at it before he would order the parts. Made no sense to me, I had brought it by the shop about a week ago and he looked at it, but ok, I can deal with it.

Figured I'd stop by on my way home from work today. About 20 miles from the dealership, I was beside a 18 wheeler and the windscreen came loose, bounced off the top of my helmet and disappeared into the traffic behind me. I was more embarrassed than angry. There was no chance of stopping to look for it.

Arrived at dealer and explained what happened. At first SM didn't know what to do. I convinced him to call Buell. Good news is Buell will give me a new shield. Bad news is dealer will not order the parts unless I leave the bike with them. I would not get the bike back until the new shield is installed. Said that is their policy.

Is this some type of rule with Buells that you have to leave the bike at the dealer in order to get parts. Sorry, but I give up on this. I'll buy an after market shield before I'll leave the bike there for 2 weeks. As said many times before, weakest link with Buell is the Harley dealerships. To bad really. I'm not feeling the love.

I might be wrong, but I think you need to try a different dealer. Some will cooperate with you on an issue like that.

Sounds like you're lucky the thing didn't hit below the helmet!

I think the dealer is worried about liability issues but I can't see a missing windscreen being a safety hazard.....
Try calling Buell CS again and explain what the dealer told you.
I agree that's a load of BS from the dealer!

We just spent 30 minutes talking to our dealer and are adding to our list of "warranty" parts so that when the BAS recall is done, they do all of it. This includes a front rotor, clamp spring and vent hose. All of this is being ordered without the bike being seen by the dealer until all parts are in. Find a new dealer.

Talking about liability. I would have thought that either the dealer or especially Buell CS would have bent over backwards to get the recall kit installed on my bike before the screen took to flight. I did buy the bike in January 07 and the recall came out last July/August time-frame. From what I understand and I'm no lawyer, it is illegal to sell a bike which has been recalled and not fixed.

I might add that the dealer I am working with now is not the dealer where I purchased the bike. They were great about doing the BAS recall.

No.
Dirt, the Buell tall shield creates a lot of buffeting and wind noise.Unless you are over 5'8" or so you might consider the stock shield which doesn't use the bolt kit.
If you are tall, there are discussions about aftermarket shields here.

My dealer tried to pull the same thing on my sidestand recall a while back. Said they wouldn't order the kit without seeing the bike and that I'd have to leave the bike there (estimated to be 1 week) until the parts were installed. I called Buell CS and they contacted the dealer. Turned out they had a kit in stock (they were saving it for someone else). Buell had the SOAR go to the dealer and supervise the install. While it was there, my license plate light fell off. They said they'd order a new one and install it under warranty (no BS about leaving the bike this time). That was almost 6 months ago. I ended up just ordering the light from Dave at Appleton and putting it on myself, on my dime. Same dealer "wasn't participating" in the folding hat deal. Also told me the knit caps were "for non-Buell owners."

I love my KTM dealer, why can't he sell/service Buell?

BTW: my dealer won a Pegasus award for 2006... cream of the crop...

Well, on the way home from work today I spotted my windscreen on the side of the highway. I did a quick pullover and was able to pick it up. It was scratched and chewed up a bit, but was in one piece and in pretty good shape considering. You can see where it was run over a few times and all the plastic fasteners were scraped off. That Lexan is some tough stuff.

I was in the far left lane when it flew off, but for whatever reason I found it about 15-20 feet off the right side of the road in the gravel. Now that I have the windscreen back in my possession, I may just take it to another dealer for replacement or I might call Buell CS tomorrow and see if they grease the skids with the current dealer.

I've put some miles on the bike with the stock shield and do prefer the tall (I'm 6'0" and ride most of miles on the interstate). Riding with stocker is like riding with no shield at all. Very little difference. The forecast here tomorrow is for heavy rain and I'm betting the stocker won't impress me.

Dirt,

I realize that this is after the fact. I believe there is a separate search engine the dealer uses to check recalls on non stock parts/acessories.

I don't know why they would want to hold your bike hostage to get the job done.

Bienhoabob,

I'm considering a larger windshield for my Uly. Would you mind sharing the considerations that led you to choose the Parabellum over the others available. Also, which height did you get? I'm 6'1" with a 32" inseam.

Dirt,

I apologize for the further hijacking of your thread. I would have PMed Bienhoabob but thought the question would be of general interest.

+1 on your assessment of the stock windshield. Indiscernible difference with and without it.

No Problem Gotj. I'm probably going to go with a larger shield for next winter myself. I found the Buell tall to be good down to about 30F. However, it gets a might chilly riding in the 20's and teens with the tall.

I wouldn't object to a discussion here on what size is right for someone who is 6'0". There are numerous options out there, including Bienhoabob's offer.

Well, not that it'll help you tall guys, but I'm 5'8" and I'm happy with the height of the stock screen.
Dirt; you need to find a better dealer.

I'm a glutton for punishment. I stopped by the dealer this morning for my daily dose of friendly service.

Thought if I dropped off the scratched up shield, they would go ahead and order me a new one. No chance. SM still insists I leave the bike. Claims he is charged by Buell for parts and does not get reimbursed until the parts are installed and he has sent in the paperwork. Says if he orders the parts and I never return, he is stuck with the parts. Sheesh! It's a recall and or warranty work. Why would I not return and have the new shield installed?

On my first visit to this dealer, the SM tried to sign me up for my 1k service. Bragged that he had the best Buell tech on the east coast. So sorry to say that I won't be taking advantage of that superior skill and knowledge.

Can someone show me the bolts off of the bike, or a better shot than the black above>

I have a Cee Bailey's that I would like to attach better, but want to be able to switch back and forth without taking the bottom cover off as well.

Thanks!

Gotj,

Just noticed that my response to your question never took.

Anyway, I'm 5'9" with a 31" inseam. Had my '06 seat lowered 1.5 " and a Pro Pad installed.

I went with the Parabellum 24". The top of the shield hits right about nose level. Perfect for me. What sold me is the upper support brackets. (Gmbh has posted pictures of the set up.)

I'm the guy that had a CeeBaileys 16" that cracked and split in two during an endurance event. (Search ButtLite IV)

During such events, I'm putting on 1,000 to 1,300 miles a day and needed something bigger than stock. The Laminar helped, but not in a rain storm.

Fit,finish of the Parabellum is top notch. I'll give it a good test in April during the Cape Fear 1000.

(I emailed you on the Laminar, also.)

Bob

Looks like I will be buying a Zero Gravity Tall screen. I finally got through to Buell CS and explained my reluctance to leave my bike at the dealer while they order the Buell tall screen replacement. The rep told me that this it was not uncommon for dealers to mandate that the bike stay at their shop while ordering parts. Said dealers get burned all the time by people who never return to pick up ordered parts. Also told me they would not just ship the parts to the dealer. Dealer has to order them.

It looks like a standoff, because I won't leave the bike there. I've moved on.

Are you folks that are using ZG shields using the standard fasteners from the stock Buell shield or ordering a set of the ZG fasteners. I know there is another tall screen thread going with some of this info, but I wasn't clear on it. I'm not so concerned with using the pop off fasteners, bolts are ok, just want to make sure the shield stays on this time. Thanks

I ordered my ZG on Ebay from the St. Paul Harley place and it came with 4 new Buell push pins. That is all I've ever used on it and I've had the bike up to the rev limiter in 5th. The ZG doesn't even budge at any speed. No bolts needed.
