Oiy,

Wierd one here; I was washing down the bike whether it needed it or not... Anyway, I got around to washing the tailight/license plate area and the darn bracket/bezal contraption that deflects the light back onto the license plate... Well, it just crumbled like some sort of goat cheese... Not cool... If I had to guess, the problem would seem to be related to an incandecent lamp (aka light bulb) that is a little too hot for where it is placed... Simply put, it seems like it baked the hell out of the plastic that the thing is made out of... Too much heat, light for the application... Anyone else experiance such a failure?... Any-hoo, I called my dealer and they will try and procure a replacement as I have an appointment for the side-stand coming up the Wednesday after next...

Kevin

Yup, common problem.
They will replace it under warranty with a new and improved design.

That whole plastic thing back there is an ugly piece of crap. This winter I'm going to take
mine off and with help)make a better mount for
the license plate and turn signals.

Yup, had two fail (one fell of when I brushed up against the bike, the other just fell of by itself during a ride) before the most recent one that seems to be of far greater quality!

Seems like another adjustment they needed to make, and ultimately made to an otherwise awesome bike!

Buell upgraded this part - It was (is?) a common problem on early Ulysses. Mine failed at 380 Miles... replaced under warranty.

Just talked to my dealer Man O' War Harley in Lexington, KY about 100 miles away. I am taking my bike in for sidestand recall on the 21st. I asked them 3 weeks ago to order a license plate light under warranty cause mine fell off. Wanting to get the light and sidestand in one trip but they refuse to order the light without seeing it first. What could be so hard about ordering a light or just taking my word that its broke? Anyone have a part#? I might just order one and pay for it.

Yeah, but my dealer sucks...

Bike is going in for the sidestand work on Saturday. I called the service dept today to inform them of the light. They can't order it until they see it. Understandable I guess.

Cheers

When we thought our clutch cable was fraying, they ordered the part and told us to wait until it came in and they would do the kick stand recall at the same time.

For those of us that have to drive a distance to a Buell dealership, bringing it back for a $7 part is crazy, especially with gas prices as they are.

Agreed - When I went to get my sidestand recall done at my local dealer - Glendale - the parts magically disappeared from stock, despite making an appointment, and taking half a day off work... The service department stepped up to the plate and picked up my bike and dropped it off again to make up for my inconvienence (45 miles one way), and took care of the license plate light while they were at it.

Wish you'd let me know . . . I would have surprised them and had it sitting there at 10:00AM tomorrow.

Ya treat a mediocre dealer like a hero and they begin to act like heres. . . . it's called "modeling" to the psychologists.

You guys might try to do what I've decided to do.

Order the part by phone prepaid. When it gets in hopefully in time for your appointment you just show them the broken stuff and "Oh by the way, I have one in the parts dept, may I be reimbursed now?"

Did it with my new sidestand, and now I have a new spare fan at home waiting for its day.

Only drawback is the chance that by the time my current fan completes its death trip there might be an improved model and then I'm stuck with a brand-new old-style...

I went out to look at the ECM to assist Az rider and noticed my license plate lens fell apart and half of it is gone. I have just about had it with this machine. Going shopping next week. Saki anyone? I still can't believe it.
Bad exhaust servo
Broken tail light
cutting off at highway speeds
misses and cuts off in the rain.
sidestand bolt keeps coming loose. (Dealer won't even sell me the new parts.)
Pinged terrible above 85F.
New rear tire at less than 7K
Ignition fuse popped several times.
surging at 3K
Wires worn at the steering head at less than 2K
Now the license plate lens is gone.

Thanks Xbimmer did you get my reply?

AS for the broken license plate light, I have decided that I am going to leave it the way it is. I am always getting people asking me about the Buell and how I like it. I will use the broken light as a monument to their quality control. Every time I ride out of town I am asked about the bike. My response is that I love the Bike but, I could not recommend mine to anyone who is not mechanically an electrically inclined.

Davo - your experience with the Ulysses is not the norm. Perhaps seek assistance and ask for help working your way up to the top.

1. ad exhaust servo - Shit happens. Did the dealership fix it? Buell said there were like 40 that had bad parts?
2. Broken tail light - New one on me. Sounds like small shit.
3. cutting off at highway speeds - Unacceptable & Significant ... if you have not, start a thread that details how you've been back to the dealership for resolve. Ask for Service Dept manager for help and proceed to the GM if not resolved. Has HD/Buell Customer Service been pursued?
4. misses and cuts off in the rain. - See #3
5. sidestand bolt keeps coming loose. (Dealer won't even sell me the new parts.) - This is part of the recall. Ask the Service Manager for assistance and pursue like #3. Lok-tite keeps bolts in place. Maybe the dealership needs a kick in the ass.
6. Pinged terrible above 85F. - Seeing more and more of this. Again ... the dealership is key to resolving. Pursue with Buell CS if needed. Have dates and the names of people at the dealership. Ask for help.
7. New rear tire at less than 7K - Welcome to motorcycles. Some tire compounds are softer than others. A tire at 7k is nothing to bitch about
8. Ignition fuse popped several times. - Did the dealership isolate the problem and repair or is it still popping fuses? Again ... the dealership is key to resolving
9. surging at 3K - Guess? Pursue with tour dealership then Buell CS is still not resolved to your satisfaction. Always start off by asking for help and have names and dates ready
10. Wires worn at the steering head at less than 2K - Is this resolved? Part of it is a 1st model year bike.
11. Now the license plate lens is gone. - Gimmee a break. It's like a $6 part and many have crumbled.

It sounds like you've had more than your share of problems but c'mon ... showing everyone a busted license plate assembly? That's petty as hell. If I met a V-Strom rider that showed me something that was broken on his bike just so he could demonstrate he's unhappy with Suzuki or his dealership, I'd tell him to sell it and get something that makes him happy.

Your Ulysses doesn't represent all the others out there. Run around telling people that you're unhappy and it's a POS...see what type of help you get. Tell folks you love the bike, you want it running 100% but you need their help in making it whole...maybe you'll hear from some terrific people bent on making you happy and your Ulysses 100%.

DAve

... I apologize if you covered your dealer and Customer Service request for assistance interaction elsewhere but the comment about the light assembly got under my skin.

Dave,

I used the term "mine". I do tell folks that there are many people that have ULY's with no problems at all!!!!!

I will not let the dealer techs work on my bike. (period)

I purchased 3 HDs in 03 and the Uly in Oct 05. The customer is always right or they cease to be customers. As for petty, well if 6 bucks is petty for me then it ain't 1/petty for HD! I have had it!!

Happy Constitution day!
