No biggie really. but I'm out last night washing the bike for my Buell Friday's ride to work day, and as I run the sponge over the rear tail fender, the number plate light housing falls to the floor. On closer inspection, it looks like the plastic stalks that receive the screws that hold the thing in place just sort of disintegrated/ fragmented into little pieces. I wonder if it's due to vibrations or over tightening at the factory - or both This happen to anyone else here? Should this be a warranty replacement item? Cheers -Jack | ||

Yeah, the local HD/Buell shop just called me to tell me my new cover came in as mine left while I was out riding and I never knew it until I got home... | ||

Mine fell off too. Piece o crap for sure. Glued it back together with some low slump adhesive. If ya look close, the molded pieces are actually square. Damn thin too. Peace Milo | ||

mine fell off also. The backing plate of the new one I bought looks brittle and I don't think it will last long. Maybe Buell should look in to the supplier of the Licence Plate light assembly. | ||

Good news. I just got back from the dealer (California H/D Buell), and they're gonna replace it under warranty - no sweat. While I was there I looked around the showroom, and was surprised and happy to see that Cali H/D Buell had a Buell display set up in a prominent position next to the main sales desk, just inside the main entrance - one of the bikes mounted on a stand to look like it's cornering, with a back screen that said Own The Corners. They also had 6 06 XB's in stock (no Ulys), and several of the staff were wearing Buell shirts - great to see  Cheers -Jack | ||

mine fell off today too...granted i had just thrown the thing on the ground.  my left shin hit something and i think the plate light was what scraped my shin. friggen old pavement,chunk rolled under my front tire as i pulled into a parking space and blam i was on the ground. first time in 20 years of street riding i've been down on pavement. | ||

Yes, I lost my number plate light at 500 miles. I just bought another assuming I had knocked off in the garage or something but I never found it | ||

Make that almost ten. I unscrewed mine while adding an additional LED lighting to the rear. While screwing it back in I heard a crack and noticed that one of the small screws that holds the front cover to the backing plate had broken it's mounting point inside the cover. The other side is still holding but I haven't dropped by the dealer yet. Someone must have a better solution if the replacements are just as brittle as the originals. | ||

I'd not sweat it.... Just something to check. I had my tail light on my XR1000 fall off no less than 3-4 times. DAve ...checkin' my Uly now | ||

What part are we talking about here? If it's the license plate light, wouldn't the wire to the bulb keep it from completely falling off? | ||

Here's a pic that I hope gives an idea.  I think you can easily see the various cracks and fail point(s) - me thinks poor material choice. Given that the bulb is fairly bright, without the cover over it, I'm sure I'd garner more attention than I'd care for from the local LEOs (Message edited by rhinowerx on February 11, 2006) | ||

Rhinowerx, Thanks for the photo. That is exactly what will be happening to mine since it is held on by only one side now. The big questions are how much longer will mine hold out, will my dealership cover it under warranty, when will someone come out with the carbon fiber replacement? | ||

Mine broke off Thursday when I was removing my bike cover. It is a pretty flimsy piece. I guess I should ask if it will be a warranty item also. | ||

The same thing happened to my Uly after going down in November. The hard parts of the bike were mostly untouched because of the bag, but as the wife was helping me put it away, the cover came off. I though she had hit it because the tail section of the bike wasn't touched, now I see that its the part is prone to breaking. | ||

Same thing on mine at 2,000 miles except one of the screws was still sticking out. I figured it got broke at the shop because I had just got the bike back from the head shake analysis when I noticed it. So I got a new part in a box but no bike to use it on. | ||

Well, I think we are at 13 and 1/2. And the clock is still ticking!  Seems like a warranty issue to me. I would turn it in. Maybe in the future there will be an upgraded part. | ||

Mine is still intact and secure (knock on wood) I doubt everyone that's not having an issue will weigh in on this ...tho it is interesting the failures. DAve | ||

Well Guys, Here is my first post. By best friend came by on his Ulysses Sunday PM after I just read the posts about the license lights breaking. In telling him about it he pointed to his with a light touch and off it came, and with only 1,000 mile on the bike. Here is his fix. We removed the broken light assembly and bulb, pushing the wiring back into the fender area. Took off the license and flipped the inspection holder up to cover the hole. Looks OK and maybe the dealer will fix it under warranty. My Ulysses has 1,200 miles on it and it is still in one piece.  | ||

Just to clarify, they will come off and it is not related to hitting it or the bike being dropped. I replaced mine (bike had about 1700 miles on it) after coming back from a ride during which it just plain fell off. No idea where, but it fell off without being hit in any way! I think we have a combination of very brittle material as shown in the pic above, and the screws attaching the base plate to the cover being totally inadequate. After mine fell off you could still see the screws sticking out of they respective holes in the base plate, but they were nowhere near long enough to have been effective. Just my thoughts... | ||

A little preventative maintenance...I ran a bead of clear silicone around the light to help hold it..no doubt is is brittle plastic..thanks for the heads up.. | ||

that's the way adrian. i was lucky enough to have found the parts and siliconed them back on. we'll see how long it lasts. | ||

Washed my bike, yesterday (should have left it dirty). My lens/cover assembly came off in my hand at the slightest touch. Does anyone know if Buell customer service has been called on this? We've got to be up close to 15 bikes that this has happened to now. The base plastic is so brittle. | ||

Wow, I was thinking about getting a Ulysses, but this might make me change my mind. Hah! Just kidding. But I do hope they figure out a fix before I buy mine. Or maybe I'll just rip it off myself, and get it over with when I first get the bike. Um, no, maybe not. | ||

I just got a call from my dealer - seems the replacement lens cover (being replaced under warranty) is back-ordered until March 24  My concern is that the replacement part is gong to be as brittle. So I'm wondering whether it isn't worth considering a license place light housing from another brand of motorcycle? The set up on my wife's SV650 looks to be similar in size and shape , and seems to be made of stronger material. Just a thought. Cheers -Jack |
