OK, I have recently aquired a 2000 X1.Bone stock. My question is this.Would i be better off, at 6'4" and 325 pounds, spending my 1000 dollars or so on a new Penske shock or on a race kit? The bike now has the recall shock with an SRP. Is the new 2001 shock that much better? Worth the PITA it's gonna' be to get it changed at the local dealer and then getting the race kit? Is the Penske THAT bitchin'?
Thanks and sorry for all the questions(My first Buell)

X1Rated/Justin: If I had the same decision to make, I'd go for... BOTH. :) You can do both for around a grand as follows.

  • 2001 Shock (shouldn't be a big hassle)
  • Send shock to racetech for custom springing and valving. They will ask you for details and will know how to spring and valve the shock to suit your wieght and riding preferences.
  • Upgraded springs for forks. The race springs from Buell might even be a good choice.
  • Race ECM
  • Race Header
  • Compatible muffler of your choice
  • Force Intake or other equivalent intake, or gutted airbox and K&N filter.
  • Dealer performed reset of ECM/TPS calibration.

Well that's a helluva thing! I didn't know racetech performed that kinda service.Even though now I have to deal with the dealer, that's exactly what I'm gonna do!
Thanks!

Justin: one comment to Blake's excellent suggestions; I'd go with Race Tech or Traxxion Dynamics springs for the front. I've heard the Buell Race springs are .85 kg/mm, and my guess is you'd need .95 or 1.0 kg/mm. Both shops will also be able to recommend fork oil weight - stock is a bit thin.

Traxxion also will rework your shock, I mention them because they've done suspension on all my bikes and done an outstanding job every time.

Cool! I had no idea I had any options other than factory or a new shock. I have some more questions though. Are these companies just revalving the shock? and would that really make a difference with my small weight issue?because it doesn't seem that either carries a replacement spring for the Showas. Also, I'm used to working on my old iron, so I'm gonna have to learn this "new-fangled" stuff. Is the fork spring replacement basically take the caps off, replace the springs, make a spacer and off I go? Or is it a complete dissasembly? Thanks for helping out the newbie guys.(just a little excited about FINALLY gettin' my Buell, in case you couldn't tell)

The same discussion is going on in the Suspension topic. Take a look.

Justin: They'll replace your rear spring too! We are having a similar discussion in the Suspension Topic of the Knowledge Vault. Check it out.
