Many of you know the story I had to tell before Bike week about my sister-in-law and her children moving in with us. Many of you here during the BBQ's know that Sammie and I were terribly distracted with phone calls and family issues dealing with the aftermath of their departure. There isn't enough memory on the BadWeb for me to tell the entire story. Sammie and her sister grew up on the streets from their early teens until their early 20's. They survived doing whatver they had to do. My wife (Sammie) luckily found a better path in life, and has become the wonderful woman that I am married to today. Sammie's sister on the other hand has been a scam artist her entire life. She has honestly worked only one or two jobs as a bartender and a welder and that wasn't for long. She did get married to a guy who made great money as a crab fisherman and that was great until he nearly killed her, and then later killed himself. She returned to the hustle then and borrowed money and begged wherever she could with the promise of I'll pay you back later. We fell for it and let her and her new (useless) husband move in with us for a few weeks. We even helped them put a down payment on a new house. After getting almost $4,000 dollars from us they disappeared in the middle of the night to run back to Las Vegas with the loot. Did I mention every law enforcment officer in 5 states was looking for them for the attempted kidnap of our grandaughters? To make this story short: Sammie's sister was found dead in a hotel room in Las Vegas on March 16th. It appears she accidentally overdosed on illegal prescription drugs. She left her three boys ages 6,10, and 12 without a mother or father. The running and scamming are finally over. We aren't really grief stricken, but more happy that maybe her sister is finally at peace. Now for those of you that were here for the BBQ, why I had to run to the phone every 15 minutes. Nick | ||

With the children is truly where our sadness lies. Paula had scammed so many people and stolen so much over the past 20 years, it was amazing that she made it this far. I talked with the Medical Examiner in Las Vegas and she told me that she was shcoked to find out that Paula was only 38. She looked like she was 50. They are awaiting the final tox scrren but they did say that there were so many pills lying about the room that they called i npoison control to gather them up. Thanks for the kind words in PM and here. Not to sound cold, but there is a part of Sammie that is relieved that the run is over for her sister. Nick | ||

Nick & Sammie - sounds like Paula had a rough life, some of it by circumstance and others by choice. I hope they find a stable, loving home for the children. My heart goes out to them. We'll keep your family in our prayers. | ||

Not to sound cold... Not cold brother, sane. We do what we can for others, especially family, but some can not be helped, for one has to want help, for help to be any good. Y'all did what y'all could, and no one could have expected more than you gave. In my opinion you went above and beyond. Let's just hope her children have learned from their mother's mistakes. Sammie is a good woman. You are a good man. Things will aways turn out for the best for you two. | ||

Nick and Sammie, The loss of a family member regardless of any "estrangment" is still a loss. Plus, like Mike said above, it's always the kids that pay the price. Having had a family member myself that lived "on the fringe" I do know what you went through. It is not "cold", it's a coping mechanism that you develop after many times of getting hurt. I feel very sorry for the kids. What's foing to happen with them? Brad | ||

Thanks again everyone. So far, we understand that their step father will keep them. I am sure he is under the microscope right now as well. If that doesn't work out, I am sure they will start trying to find family to take them. The kids have their own set of issues. All three of them are super smart, but have their own emotional baggage that will have to be dealt with. | ||

And today.... we get a call from one of the local used motorcycle dealers asking for her. She and her fine hubby went and bought a 1970 Honda 750 about two days after they got here. (Clue #1 we were being scammed) It turns out that they wrote the guy a bad check and now he wants his bike back. We told him good luck and to call the cops in Vegas. |
