Help... I put two new plugs in it which usually fixes it. Then I put two more new plugs in it. But this time it sounds and feels like it's carburetor related. It will start and run if I keep a good amount of choke pulled. It will run at low rpm's if I keep bumping the throttle which shoots a little gas into the carb. It's been 3 months since it has been fired up. It stays in my climate controlled basement. Any thoughts? Thanks John

sounds lean. how long since the intake manifold seals were replaced?

I have had the same problem with my 96 S1 and 98 S3 when they sit around for more than a couple months without riding them. The problem is stale gas that gums up the idle jet passages. The cure so far, and I've been lucky in this regard, has been to fill up with fresh gas and ride it around mixing freeway and surface streets using choke as required, until it unclogs. If you are lucky too, the fresh gas and the vibrations from freeway riding will dissolve the crud in the idle circuit and it will run normally.
OK, now knowing this, you can avoid all this hassle the next time by putting some Stabil, a fuel preservative, in the gas tank before storing the bike.

I'm with Jim, Jerry, Bluz and Sparky. Same thing happened to me. I pulled the carb apart and jetted everything clean with aerosol carb cleaner. Easy job, two beers max, worked like a charm.

Sweet--it is a bit noisy--what??---be sure you double checked the torque on the engine sprocket and clutch--the idiot that put that together apparently forgot to properly torque the one on his S-2 and the engine nut came off pulling into driveway at work.Absolutely no noise,etc until bike quit--nut went under chain at clutch hub--no damage to speak of except my pride.Made double sure to clean,red loctited the dogsnot out of it,and torqued to max spec.

Ok, you guys with hands on carb experience...this carb is off my 98 S1W that was running crappy at low RPM's. The jets were indeed not as clean as they should have been and the gas did smell crappy. I took the carb apart and cleaned it and am putting everything back and have a question about this jet. What is the adjustment for this screw? It is inside the bowl so adjustment after it is on the bike is not an option. Is this one of those turn it in until it makes contact, then two turns out kind of things? I have a parts book but it does not show this jet. If I get this figured out I can put it back together and fire it up. Thanks in advance for the help. J

That's your idle mixture screw. You should have counted the turns it took to bottom it (gently) so you could return it to it's previous adjustment. Acces to the screw is blocked by a lead plug on stock carbs. Yours has obviously been removed previously.

2 1/2 turns out is a good baseline to start at.

Also, you should have a 45 pilot jet.
The stock one is too small.
With a 45, the 2 1/2 turns is a good starting point.

It is not inside the bowel, it's just behind it when everything is buttoned up.
It can be reached from the outside but it's a bitch.
The headers WILL burn you!

Yup, after a carb teardown and reassembly, It once again runs great. Thanks for keeping me pointed in the right direction and the help. Off for a sunday run around Philly.

Glad you got it working, But the best fix for it is an HSR42 Mikuni....

To this day, with all the mods to my S1W ( and there are lots), I still think the single best single mod was the Mikuni HSR42 carb.

I just wish the FI Buells could have the instantaneous throttle response of a Mik below 2500 RPM.
