Ummm where did Hayden go? I just looked at the results, and he didn't finish. Pedrosa is nowhere to be found either. I don't think that this was part of Honda's stragagy for winning the championship.

From Superbikeplanet.com

"The Repsol garage was besieged with press shortly after the incident. I wouldn't be approaching Hayden anytime yet, not happy is an understatement. The Repsol camp will not be a place of harmony tonight."

Yeah, I would expect that.

No fix. Pedrosa wanted to pass. BBC showed it loads, and in slo mo and freeze frame. Pedrosa lost the front diving down the inside.

No team orders, which seems ridiculous under the circumstances.

You should have seen him punching the ground then swearing across towards Pedrosa. I could lip read plenty of the expletives.

Team orders? Was not Pedrosa within striking distance of the title? Why the hell would there be team orders? This isn't F-1. Also, don't forget. Pedrosa=Spanish. Dorna=Spanish and Repsol=Spanish. You do the math. That's too bad. This is not how I like to see Championships played out. Sure it's all part of racing. But I'd rather see some one win or lose it on the Track. Not win or lose it because some one took out a contender.

Pedrosa was about as close to winning the title as I am. Only if he managed to feed everyone ahead of him a large plate of fresh spinach could he have hoped to win.

Pedrosa should have been playing for his team and not be out for himself. What he should have been doing is try to leach points away from Rossi, and ensure Hayden gets his best possible finish. If Pedrosa had Rossi's points, then he would have been in striking range, but with 34 points behind and only 2 races left, he should have been a support rider.

"Pedrosa may be in his rookie year for the class but he's a double world champion."

Edwards, Capirossi, Biaggi, Melandri, Hayden, Roberts Jr, and I am pretty sure Bayliss (along with scores of others) were world champions (in their own respective classes), but motogp is a different animal. While 250cc may be a great stepping stone, that doesn't make up for experience on these bikes or the maturity needed to play a team game. Would you ever see Edwards do that to Rossi?

Edit: Correction, Hayden wasn't a world champion. He was a national champion.

crash.net is back up.

"Dani Pedrosa has made one of the biggest mistakes ever seen in modern motorcycle grand prix racing - smashing into team-mate Nicky Hayden early in the Portuguese Grand Prix and destroying the American's world championship lead.

Hayden came into the penultimate race of the season with a 12 point lead over Valentino Rossi, who is now leading the race from Camel Yamaha team-mate Colin Edwards. Hayden was third at the time of the accident, which occurred when Pedrosa lost the front of his Repsol Honda while trying to re-pass the American on the inside as they entered a left hand turn.

The pass was never realistically going to work and Dani, having lost the front, slammed into the side of Hayden, sending them both cartwheeling into the gravel. Hayden was apoplectic with rage, removing his helmet and screaming with frustration. It must have taken every inch of his restraint to avoid throttling the young Spaniard, who appears to have broken a finger."

"Fortuna Honda rider Elias - who had looked out of a job at the end of the season - took his first win, and podium, from just eleventh on the grid and after a photo finish between himself and Rossi.

Toni's win cost Rossi five vital points, but he will still take an eight-point championship lead into the Valencia season finale after Dani Pedrosa unforgivably took out then world championship leading team-mate Nicky Hayden, while trying to take third place from the American early on."

Watching it on Speed, I'm so pissed.

You could read alot of words from Hayden's mouth.

At the end it was "bullshit, this was supposed to be my year!"

Can't help but to feel bad for Nicky, Pedrosa was lucky to scamper out of the gravel before he got the life squeezed out of him.

What a rip. Nicky can still win it. He take 1st and Rossi takes 3rd in Valnecia and it is his. But that would mean Dani has to get between Rossi and him and let Nicky go.

Dani is running under team orders all right, his orders are "you are the man for the future, screw the American punk, we have you slated as the man for years to come"

Dani needs a good hard punch in the mouth. Take out a couple of teeth. The hell with what the Honda guys have to say, after all Nicky has a contract.

Being an old guy I can imagine what Kenny Roberts Senior would have done, or one of the old car guys like A.J. Foyt. Foyt would have hit him on the spot.

From my armchair view (I don't have an armchair, lol) I'd agree.

Absofreakinlutelybangonright! Edwards, what a pleasant fella he's always been, said several times to Suzi Perry on the grid walk, that he was sticking to the plan (with grin on face). It was clear to see he did exactly that in the first stages of the race, doing his best to cover Rossi's back. That for once is where Pedrosa should have been.

Sprinkler, I did the math. This was Portugal not Spain. Pedrosa might have been spurred on by the close proximity to home and the large amount of Spaniards present, but to challenge his world title hopeful team mate on lap 4 and take him out by mistake was terrible judgement on his part.

I've never ever seen Dani Pedrosa even come close to making such a horrendous error like that entering a turn. It looks to me almost like he intentionally T-boned Nicky. I've never liked Pedrosa much, but I've always respected his skill/performance. I lost most of that respect today. Shame on him.

Whatever the reason, it is horribly unfortunate. Rossi was absolutely beatable today, and he is incredibly fortunate that Dani Pedrosa did his work for him.

Congrats to Tony Elias for a glorious victory. Rossi loses again, and that is fine by me.

Here's hoping for a Hayden victory with a Rossi 3rd place at Valencia. That will be truly glorious.

Go Nicky!

And Kenny Roberts Jr. said in the post race interview that he lost track of the lap count after he took the lead with two laps to go and held it for about one lap.

He came up to the start finish line in the lead and expecting to see the checkered flag and saw the white flag instead. He said that threw him off and admitted that he was not sure he could have held Rossi or Elias off for another lap for the win though.

And Colin Edwards rode a class act race. He could not have caught and passed Rossi but he rode hard and clean in second for as long as he could.

Elias was unreal when he passed Rossi the first time and on a couple of other passes. It was like he just said the hell with the brakes and got away with it.

I just want to see everyone still up on their tires at the finish next week. It could be a great race.

Blake, there's no way Pedrosa got it wrong in terms of riding the bike. He made a bold move down the inside of a tight corner and the front went away. Personally I don't believe he should have been in that corner like that in the first place, but no team orders. Given how far up the inside of Hayden he was it was unlucky that Hayden got tagged at all as both bikes were at different angles into the corner, which is why Pedrosa's front wheel just caught Hayden's rear wheel. A little more distance and luck on Hayden's side and it would have been a different story.

You might also want to consider, Pedrosa is rookie of the year, and stands to be the highest point scoring rookie ever, and he has two wins, same as Hayden. Yes Hayden has finished higher than Pedrosa 9/6 but if Pedrosa had got away today and Rossi and Hayden got into one and took each other out (anythings possible right) then today's standings would read

Hayden 236

Pedrosa 227

Rossi 219

With the absence of team orders who can blame Pedrosa for trying. He's a racer right, and the above prediction would pitch him in for the championship next time out. I wouldn't put my money on Rossi given that last round scenario, but Pedrosa would have been a great outside bet against Hayden? Now why didn't I think of that before. Dorna, Repsol should have fixed it with Hayden to take Rossi out then they could have had a Dorna, Repsol 1 2 in Spain. Oh those fixers

Did you watch the race? Rossi said he failed to get into a rhythm "and Toni was like a devil today". I don't call a video finish as Rossi 'absolutely beatable today'.

Let's hope Hayden can at least give us a spectacle in two weeks by leading the race, until Rossi passes him after half distance from a poor qualifying / start.

I never said anything about a fixed race. What I believe is that there were no "Team" orders. They raced and Pedrosa made a calculated, but totally boneheaded and stupid @ss move at that point in the race.
I believe fighting in racing is the dumbest thing ever (sorry, I hate NASCAR). But I wouldn't blame Hayden if he blasted Dani right in the face!

Not sure about that.
Dani said that he was not attempting a pass at that point. He just overcooked it, got the rear in the air and had nowhere to go. It's not like this kind of thing is typical of him.
I honestly think that both Nicky and Dani would have finished in front of Rossi had they not ended up in the gravel. Hayden had gone for a hard tyre and was going well, Dani had looked good all weekend. If the poorest performing Honda rider of the year beat Rossi today, what would the Repsol team have done?
I don't really care who wins the title - just want to see a good fight and the best guy winning.

For Hayden to maintain his composure like that is the mark of a true professional.

The Honda guys were really stepping it up after. Elias and Roberts (half Honda) moved in to attempt to steal points away from Rossi. Great job Elias, but I would have liked to see Roberts win. (That was the white flag dummy, not the checkered flag)

Sprink, I didn't say you said it was fixed. Your suggestion that this is some sort of Spanish conspiracy is ridiculous too if that was your implication. For the record, I don't agree with Dave's comment either.

The link you posted to the pic is meant to show what? That Pedrosa T-boned Hayden? If anything, it shows nothing other than two bikes colliding. The collision started before that pic and only video could offer any real insight into what happened. If Pedrosa says he went in too hot, then I'd believe him given the angle of both bikes to one another.
