k..so i'm getting ready to wrap the pipes on my x1 and i have a few questions. First off,i have never done this before,so gimme some slack.lol.
anyone have any suggestions on how to do it? or even better, got pics?
i was watching biker build off(insert all jabs here), and saw someone who had the header wrap tied to a pole, and was twisting the actual pipe toward the pole.
i think that is prolly how i'll go about getting the prefered tightness, but how much trouble am i gonna run into where the 2 pipes come together? i spent 65 bucks on this stuff,so i dont want to mess it up..
thanx all..prez

Wrapped mine while they were on the bike. However, it's not that easy to remove them from my Uly. I did the "Glitch method". Started at the front header, wrapped down to just above the muffler, back up the back header, back down to where they come together and back up the front. That way both are double wrapped.

the guy at the "hotrod" shop where i bought the wrap told me that i shouldnt double wrap them because it may cause "heat cracks" due to concentrated heat build up. he also told me to wet the wrap to keep the fiberglass from makin me itch, and to tighten it up as it dries.
is this correct?
i would think that double wrapping them would just help, but he did make a good point about the cracking..

I took mine off.Used some creative folding & wrapping to get around the O2 sensor.Made sure to half lap the insulation in order to have 2 layers around the pipe.Use the sealer.Spray on light coats till covered.About a whole can will be enough.I think it was called Cool-tech.

Definitely wet it first. It'll tighten up better.

If the stuff rubs together where 2 pipes nearly touch, it will eventuall wear out and unwrap. You have to prevent it from wearing by rubbing on itself. Happened on my race pipe (non factory header) - and I had to just take it off.

I've also seen people use safety wire every 4 inches or so for a little extra security. No telling whether that is good or bad (thinking the wire might wear into the wrap)

k...so,why are we wrapping our pipes? other than "i look cool factor"....why?

I can recall something about improved exhaust scavenging? better breathability?

Well, seeing as how I sold that header and muffler to Prez..I will answer...

The primary reason is, I sold him a race header, that had a bit of a scuff and a ding on it..the ding is about the size of your thumb, and a bunch of other scratches..

So, in the interest, of SOME astethics, I recomended wrapping it, as that was my plan until I got my D&D Full system....

Anyway, it also keeps the exhuast hotter, which helps exhuast velocity, and, I believe on this pipe, a bit of scavenging...

If anyone remembers, he had an issue with his old exhuast, and I did what I could to help him out...

Prez, I will give you a ring tomorrow evening, I am home from Hawaii, and on leave until the 14th, maybe longer, if you want, I can ride up there, and give you a hand, or whatever... we will get this thing, fixed up, and get you on the road...

rite on chase, i just ordered my new injectors, and controls, so i'm almost there... then all i have to do is register and insure my "hanger rat".. it's been in my hanger for tha last 6 months and i'm sick of my coworkers telling me it's the best "cornering" bike they've ever seen.
i'll show em!
gimme a ring on tuesday or wednesday,i have em off.. i just need a little advice, and it's alot easier to explain over the phone than to type here.
thanx for all the help fellas. Prez

Tuesday it is...like I said I am off..I wouldnt even mind the trip up there, to get out for the day...can leave in the morning, whatever...

BY THE WAY, start spraying those exhuast stud NOW(well, tomorrow), with PB Blaster.. if you havent been already, hit them quiet frequently... until you are ready to remove the exhuast(if you havent already)...

To why? It keeps the heat off the right leg.& here in 90 degree weather it makes a heck of a difference. It also helps give a very minor HP increase.
