Hope all is well!
I took a friend fishing the other day and he called me over to check out the little turtle he had caught. I strolled over to find him holding this little Stinkpot just like you would hold a Box Turtle. The thing had its' mouth wide open just waiting for the chance to latch onto one of his fingers LOL!! I told him about how they bite and the musk they release when frightened and he said "Oh, that's what that smell was".
Been having any herping luck up your way this year?

We now have 2 turtles that travel with us when we go out of town. The little girl can't be convinced they miss their mommies and want to go back outside. I can't believe how fast they grow on this miserable pellet food we get at Wal-Mart.

I love them stinkpts....sternotherus odoratus, if I rememeber correctly.
Just about my favourite choice for a pet turtle...the hatchlings are the size of a dime, and they become crazy-tame, immediately.
Guys catch them by accident, ice-fishing up here.
Right now we have two juv. snappers, which I collected last summer. Bee doing a lot of field work with fish and wildlife, lately, re: Bog Turtles.
Kurosawa: feed 'em the freeze-dried krill from wal-mart (I have a jar in front of me) from Wardley. FULL of calcium and protein, which their shells really need.
Torts, I gotta visit down there some day-trip

Found some eggs.....

She's rather large for this back porch..12" shell, lengthwise.
(no actual measurements, I value my fingers too much)

Tramp,
As always I am envious of your work with the Bogs. The last few seasons I have been part of a Timber Rattlesnake population density survey which has been quite successful but I still have a huge fondness for the shelled critters.
The same day my buddy caught the Stinkpot I captured a big ole' female Northern Water Snake. Had the typical nasty attitude and proceeded to musk and defecate all over me. As usual she was more than willing to try and strike multiple times.
I wish you would come on down and do some field herping with me. I can't promise we'll find anything but we can give it one heck of a try.

Kurosawa,
Your daughter didn't fall for the ole' "missing their mommy" line huh. Thats alright, just take good care of them and they may still be around to amuse her kids in the future. I personally am glad to hear that you are a cool enough dad to let her keep a few as pets.

Tank,
How big a clutch did she lay? Are you going to go the bucket route again or just fence them off to keep the predators out?
Have you given anymore thought to hitting Deals Gap with us this Sept.?

They are in a pretty good spot, right in the corner. I think I'll just cover it with chicken wire and stake it down good.

As far as Deals Gap, I'd love to roll up there with y'all. At this point, I'm 95% "in". Just let me know when/where so I can put in for vacation plenty early and line up shelter.
