Spike,
Saying you feel like a criminal is a bit extreme isn't it? To be a criminal you must be conducting criminal acts which in fact you were. It is illegal to pull a wheelie. It is illegal to go 13 miles over the speed limit. Now before you ask, Yes I do the same thing. However you are knowingly breaking the law and must be willing to suffer the consequences that go along with it. Why be upset with the officer, the system or your insurance premium?
No one forces us to ride above the limits so the only person we should be upset with when we get busted is ourselves.

Stinkpots rule!!
They are pretty neat little beasties. I have never kept one in captivity but I do enjoy watching them scurry around the muddy bottoms of the local waterways.
Down here they hatch earlier and it is not an uncommon sight to see the little fellers all bunched together in one small area feeding on Tubifex.
Now as far as the best Chelonian pet I am going to have to go with Clemmys Insculpta. A real beauty and brains to back it up.
Good luck on your quest for a winter companion!
PS. I thoroughly enjoyed the newspaper article! Now I need to get my Coal Skink article scanned so I can have something to brag about LOL.

It is, but that's the whole point. I'm a really safe rider/driver. I've never been at fault for an accident. I've avoided more than I can count. I try to be really courteous on the road and I always try to maintain a low profile so I don't give motorcyclists a bad image. I do my best to keep the exhaust noise to a reasonable level when I'm around other cars. If I give it a little too much throttle leaving a stoplight in a rural area and the front end comes up, that doesn't make me the bad guy. It shouldn't provoke anger from the local LEOs. If the needle on the speedo isn't pointed exactly at the number on the sign, the driver shouldn't be persecuted. I'm willing to take my lumps when I deserve them, but the punishment for traffic violations has gotten out of hand. Frankly, I think a little cutting up should be tolerated when it's done away from traffic and in a respectful manner. If it's not, then what's the point? Why not just drive around in a little econobox that's governed to 70mph? Why give us the freedom to own these vehicles if tapping into their potential is strictly forbidden and completely unforgivable?

The insurance premium is a completely different story. I live in NC. I ride a motorcycle. My insurance was already absurdly expensive. I haven't had more than one moving violation on my driving record in the past 5 years, and that one was reduced to 9mph over. As it turns out that last moving violation just turned over 3 years old and the new violation hasn't yet gone on my record so insurance companies looking back over the past 3 years will see zero moving violations on my record. I was getting quoted $1800-$3600 per year with a clean record.

Luvthemtorts- yep- clemmys insculpta can't be beat for brains- higher learning ability than rattus norvegicus. ever see them stomp on the ground in emulation of rainfall, so as to fool earthworms into surfacing? outrageous!
Their hatchlings, coincidentally, hatch out in October and November up here, as wqell. look little at all like the adults. No red or orange, just brown with long tails like chelydra sp.
I had one as a pet from hatchling to about 4 years old. tame like a dog- loved bananas and raw beef.
apologies for the accidental hijack, non-cheloniaphiles. i'll move my further such posts top the pets thread....

I think it is a poopy log that escaped the sewage factory and is on its way to glorious, sweet freedom!
Seriously though hard to say without knowing geographic area, season, etc.

otherwise, it looks like an otter...

Well, it's Texas, and the season was day before yesterday. I don't know what it's Latin name is, either, but I've got a million of 'em in the pond at el ranchito...

If they're valuable, I'm rich. I'm guessing they're as common as dirt (which I also have lots of).

Definately not C. marmorata if its Texas. Doubt it is Kinosternidae complex since they usually only frequent the shallows and rarely float on the surface. Doubt it is from the Chelydridae group either. I am going to go with Chrysemys concinna. As far as value, they really have no commercial value which is actually a blessing for the animals themselves. The Chelonia I work with and breed are critically endangered partly because of people looking to earn income by collecting them for food or pets.
Nothing wrong with taking a few for pets but commercial exploitation can quickly lead to a species survival becomming threatened.

arghhh..what's up with the old school 'pseudemys' genus nomenclature? I believe they were retaxonomized to chrysemys, years ago....
