Last year the motor mount on my 2000 M2 broke. Well actually the mount bolt sheared in the head and when it let loose the motor dropped while the rocker box or head struck the mount breaking it. Well the dealer put a new mount on. I was riding yesterday along with our own Shane T bolt and he noticed the front tie bar is missing on my bike. Looking at Shanes 99 S3T I agreed with him as his ride had the tie bar. It bolts to the motor mount and frame right below the steering head. See page 3-9 figure 3-4 in the Cyclone service manual. Anyways I bought my bike brand new and it never had the front tie bar installed! It came from the factory this way. I have pics of my busted motor mount and there is no front tie bar on my bike. Where it bolts to the frame has no scuffing on the paint. Now what exactly does this front tie bar do? It looks like it could stabilize the top front portion of the motor. Perhaps preventing the motor from twisting in the frame due to the rubber mounting? I even asked the dealer why the extra unused hole in the motor mount? I don't remember his answer exactly but, he said something along the lines of don't worry about it nothing important. What I don't understand is why did the Dealership mechanic not notice this piece was missing? Shane saw the part was missing from five feet away. Looks like I will be getting my $50.00 deductable back and a front tie bar installed. Perhaps even a new mount bolt.

Mike-if I remember right, none of the M2's came with a front tie bar attaching to the frame and the front motor mount, I know mine didn't. Some had actually hypothesized that it could be the reason for lower M2 front mount failures as compared to other bikes that did have the front tie bar installed. I believe that there is more info lying around here about this, probably in the KV.

Looks like this one has the front tie bar. It seems to me having the tie bar would take stress off the motormount bolt that enters the head. The S3 has basically the same frame as the M2 and it has it as well. I don't unstand why the m2 wouldn't have it.

Mike-if I remember right, none of the M2's came with a front tie bar..

My 2000 M2 has one, I got the bike used but assume it came on it when new. The first owner was not very concerned with the mechanics of the bike and did not ride it much at all.

There is supposed to be a front tie bar, it mounts down low . Some bikes had a front UPPER tie bar as well, is that what you are referring to? The pic page 3-9, figure 3-4 shows the front lower tie bar which your bike MUST have, if that is missing, then you will certainly be breaking mounts, exhaust, etc., not to mention a VERY noticeable increase in vibration. I lost the bolt for that baby once, and I noticed! Broke the muffler, too. Luckily, under warranty at the time. I believe x-1s and earlier M-2 s had the upper tie rod as well, but I'm not 100% sure. The front tie rod in said pic is actually attached to motor near oil filter boss, I don't have a good pic right here to refer you to, you could look in manual page 3-35, figure 3-52 for a not great pic of the front mount 2,000 M2 style. I hope this helps?

Don't recall my '00 M2 ever having one from the mount to the frame. Niether does the '97 S1. Not even the '98 S1W frame and mount I have sitting here.

I believe the S2 used that tie-bar though.

Looking at my books, for the M2 and S1. Same figure and page, the tie bar being shown is for the lower front tie bar. The one from the frame triangle to the spot by the oil filter boss on the engine.

A clue to the origin of that particular part on ebay. Is the missing tab for attaching the bread box. That is a mount for a S2 or earlier possibly. Which never had the breadbox.

Ooops! I was talking about the lower tie bar on my M2, not an upper one.

There is an unused boss with an empty bolt hole on the upper left side of the isolator that could be for an upper tie bar. That boss/bolt hole is not shown in Figure 3-4.

The boss/bolt hole looks like it could line up with one of the two bolts that hold the flange/rubber bushing that the isolator bolts to.

I can take a photo of that if someone wants to see it.

I imagine if you didn't have the front lower one from the oil filter area to the triangle you would have a whole world of problems/alignment issues, but on my '00 cyclone the motor mount didn't even have a tab to mount a tie bar to the frame, I know some did as Loki mentioned. I doubt that mount from e-bay came from an M2 either as it doesn't have the breadbox mount which all M2 came with

Just the normal evolution of parts. Use up the older stuff where you can and continue to march on.

I learned this with my S1 when fitting the rearsets. Seems I was missing a spacer for the swingarm support. I was and wasn't. The books show the support with a spacer. My bike came with the one piece set-up for the support from the earlier design. Thankfully Crossroads was able supply me with the required spacer.

The M2's do not have the upper tie bar, X1's do.
Not sure about the S3's.

What year? 99 and up didn't have them.
Very easy to install of you wanted, all the threaded holes are there.
Just needed the 2 bolts, washers and the tie bar.

This is getting interesting....Me thinks we not on the same wave length. At least not speaking of the same.....

Three frames 97,98,00 and no provision to use the upper left hole on the front isolator mount. My books for same do not even mention using it. Parts books don't list parts for that location as well.

Could someone post a pic of that being used on something other than an S2 or earlier....

My 2000 M2 didn't have the tie-bar at the engine mount but I eventually installed one at about 18,000 miles. I never noticed a difference on the street and I never had a problem with either way. I replaced the stock mount with a Nallin mount at 25,000 miles.

hey loki, think you may be a little confused on the use of that part on a s2 or earlier??? the s2 motor mount is a plain triangle. connected at the bottom and no "extra bolt holes or attachment points" other that the three main points. later buells removed the lower part of the triangle to create an inverted v. they also added the bread box mounts and tie bar mounts.

It does not look that way in the photo but the bolt above the mount looks to be perfectly placed to take a rod or strut bolted in the unused hole.

I don't have the PN's, but the tie-bar for a 99-02 X1 mount fits the M2. The whole kit costs under $50 from the dealer a couple years ago.

I was looking at it and thinking that if I pulled that bolt and got a right angle Heim joint rod end with a male threaded shank I could double nut the shank up through that bolt hole. Add a pivot bolt through the hole on the motor mount and I could quit worrying about my motor falling out when I ride. :>; )

I could be wrong, I may be wrong. I always thought the S2 used four links and with the frame change the later tubes only used three.

the s2 only uses three links, one at the front by the oil filter, one between the cylinders at the top mount. and one on the rear mounting block. these are pictures of my billet motor mount on the s2t,, the stock one is the same only sand cast. hope this helps.

As I remember, on M2's the upper front tie-bar was "optional." It further braces the motor but adds a little vibration.

My NHRS mount has this hole in it...I need something to fill it!
