--------------------------------------------------sorry i think i posted this same question in the wrong place the first time------------------------------
quick ? for ya.. i want to put a shortened tail mod to replace the factory unit on my 2000 buell lightning x1. The only one i can seem to find on the web is made by rrc and is on Trojan Horses site.I do like their idea, but i was actually hoping to find one that is a little bit shorter..and one that i can either order or have fabricated in the states..does anyone know where i could find one? also does a modification like that affect the safety, performance, and rigidity of the bike? i'm a skinny guy so i'm not to worried about going a few inches shorter than rrc.i also want one that doesn't have the clear coat on it,i want to powder coat it flat black..i have searched and searched to find a link to rrc's site but i have had no luck so far..anyone got a link directly to rrc? i thought maybe i could have them fab a custom unit for my bike...<<<(unlikely i know, but hey, worth a shot))i've had a picture in my mind for almost 2 yrs now of what i want my x1 to look like, and now i'm getting close to actually being able to afford it!!! lol..any help with a link to rrc or another company that does,or could, fab a shorter version would be greaaaaatly appreciated!! i just hope yall arent sitting there laughing at me saying, "that'll never work"cuz i got my heart set on this one...thanx for any help u can possibly provide!!! clinton Prezc33@hotmail.com

Have you considered a tube frame and a fiberglass cover? It'd be easy to find someone to weld it and a body shop may consider doing the glass work.

I had thought about that..but wasnt sure of the rigidity of a tube frame add on....but i also really like the way the aluminum piece looks, and i think it would be difficult to get what i'm "going" for with fiberglass..i am actually considering ditching all the plastics..i might have a new p/t job at a local custom cycle shop soon...assuming that the owner decides he doesnt mind taking on a green apprentice! if so I hope to hone my metal working skills and fab my own tank and body panels...but hey thanx for the suggestion...i'm not ruling anything out quite yet...clinton

Get a idea of what ya want, cut it up and have some one weld it back together the way ya want it.

If he/she is a good welder you should be able to smooth out and polish the bead reaaal nice like.

Prez,

The tail section in my profile, is still sitting in my garage after parting the bike out a year ago....mild steel welded and chromed....seat is red but could be redone easily enough.

It bolts to the existing Frame holes, no modifications to the wiring harness...It's got fuse block holder, bas sensor, and tail/turn sigs already to go, license plate tabs....$250

Just thought I would throw it out there.....

will it affect the safety of my bike?? can the chrome be stripped and then powder coated? with tha angle of the seat did you ever feel like you were gonna slide right off the back when giving strong throttle?
i know that i about crapped when i saw it so please hang on to it for me...heck..i grew up in kansas so do a fellow kansan a favor and hang on to it for me...lol...i'll let you know asap when i have tha cash... $50 less would be even better,,but hey,,,i understand if u do say no..even though u should say yes...(hint hint)lol..thanx again shazam and dsergison...prez

Shazam,

Where did you get the tail section for your bike? I've got a 200 X1 and I've been looking for something different. I'd say that the tail section from your bike qualifies.

DSergison,

Have you given any more thought to making a tail section? If it is reasonably priced, I'm interested.

Jeff

I'd like to make a tail section that accomodated the origional seat but which is more minimalist. a truss work tube structure like a ducatti frame.

or something.

actually I am considering taking my cast aluminum piece and cutting out triangles untill it looks like a bridge girder.

I currently have only a 1" die for my bender and they cost $200 a set. I think 1" is too big astetically. it should use 7/8 or 3/4 & 5/8" tube.

currently too much stuff for me to do like finish remodeling the bathroom.....etc.. and learning to program the mill. and roof the house. must not start another project!

Prez,

The bike was laid down a time or two, that is not why I parted it out, I had to replace the flywheel assembly and when I got the motor reassembled someone offered me $3500 dollars for it(the motor)! This subframe has never been damaged in any way, it has withstood countless wheelies, and a coupla fat bastids who just had to try it. It is not at all as uncomfortable as it looks, and I guarantee it would be impossible to slide off the back! If you're interested I'll await some further correspondence...I'll email some pictures as soon as I find the cable that connects my camera to the computer. no hurry.

JeffSD, I made it.

Sam,

Did you just whip this thing up on a whim, or did you put some stuff on paper? Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to attempt to make a tail section from scratch.

If Prez can't come up with the funds, let me know. But only with his approval. I don't want to snake anybody out of a deal.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeffsd, I saved this thread so you'll be the next on the list. I treat everybody as I would wish upon myself...he's got first dibs, cool of you to understand.

I did jig it all up from scratch I don't have any prints or anything, I can send you pictures of the construction process.....

Sam,

Let me see if I can find a local welder who is up for a challenge. I am also building a 1974 Nova right now so time is not on my side.

Sam,

Nice car/truck. El Caminos are under-represented in the hobby.

My first car was a 74 Nova, so when I decided to get back into hot rods, I bought another 74 Nova. So far, Tube frame front subframe from SmithRacecraft.com, rear suspension from PSC, one piece fiberglass front end from VFN, fiberglass trunk lid and rear bumper. I bought a stand alone fuel injection system and the engine (SB)is full of goodies (Crane, ARP, Milidon, Jeg's) I hope to drop the engine in this week and get it running in the near future. But, that is for another site (2quicknovas.com)

I talked to Al today at American Sport Bike and ordered his version of the old Buell oval race air cleaner, a crankcase vent and some frame sliders. I forgot to add the hardware to rebuild the front forks so I'll have to call him back tomorrow. Man he really knows his stuff and is a nice guy to boot.

Since my X1 is black, I want to have my fork sliders powder coated black like Al did to his bike a while back. I have tooo many projects and not enough time or money.

Prez,

Don't worry about me and you showing up at the party wearing the same thing. I live in Georgia. When I joined the site, I lived in San Diego, hence the JeffSD. I guess I could change my screen name to JeffGA but why bother.

Ya' don't kick a pullin' mule.

Let me know if you need that translated into Vegas Talk.

So, even if we do end up with similar tail sections, we won't run into each other on the strip.
