My M2 got knocked over at lunch today...

Nearly everyone in San Francisco parks by sound (back in... CRUNCH! pull forward... CRUNCH! back up... CRUNCH! perfect fit.) so I walked out of the restaurant to find a horizontal bike... for the FOURTH time in a year. (I know, I know... I should start taking up a whole parking space.)

In addition to another busted mirror (lost count of those) my clutch lever was snapped off at the hinge... so I had to ride my bike home at the end of the day without it!

Imagine riding four miles, through the middle of one of the densest, hilliest cities on the west coast, during evening rush hour, with no clutch!

Funny thing is, it turned out to be pretty easy! Getting from neutral to first was a pain in the arse... and I couldn't really use the brake... I'd just drop to a crawl in first gear, lightly riding the brake, feeling every "potato potato" of those monsterous pistons firing, hoping the light would change before I got there... Only had to hit the kill switch four times!

I never would've been able to do it without all that glorious low end TORQUE! I love my Buell!

Don't it just make you sick to see your baby all curled up on her side?

Sounds like the Buell got you home okay though.
I always try to look at the positive side of things, they could have backed over it and done a lot worse.

My biggest fear when I park somewhere. I tend to try to park on the sidewalk whenever possible. "Yes, please, let your little brat touch the gold metal on the bike. Get that kid away from it!!!!"

If you pull the wires going to your clutch lever housing, you can start the bike in gear with the clutch out. That keeps you from having to stomp it into first to take off.

Man, I'll bet that was a rough ride. I had to drive a car with a manual transmission (1981 Audi) through rush hour traffic one afternoon when the clutch cable snapped as I was shifting to second pulling away from a stop light.

I wasn't as brave as you- I got a little further along and then parked it and called my wife to come get me. I waited until about 11 PM and drove the car home when traffic was lighter. One good thing about that Audi- it would crank in gear with no problem. Shifting required some definite finesse to avoid major gear grinding.

dj: good to know about the clutch switch... fortunately, i didn't need to stomp it into first... the handle broke at the hinge, so i just levered it against the hinge mount and pulled to partially engage the clutch... it was a delicate maneuver, but i only had to do it when i was stopped... i just shifted without the clutch while moving.
