I was just reading that for the Vatican to truly determine if the Pope is truly dead they have to wack him in the forhead with a silver hammer!! I swear I am not making this up even though its April 1st! |

Dan...Being a Roman Catholic, I find that terribly funny. They have so many off the wall rites and rituals that I don't doubt this one iota. However, there is one thing the Church has to face and that is the Life Time appointment of a Pope. Considering the miracles (?) of modern medicine, a person can be kept alive long after their ability to function ceases. Sort of like the recent Terry Shiavo thing, if you get my drift. Whoops, looks like I just may be doomed to Purgatory or worse with that thought. LOL |

Old ritual no longer performed. They call out his baptismal name three times and if no response is claimed dead. The hammer bit has been replaced by placing a cloth over his head. But to think that this went on for how many years? |

Sounds similar to the test I used to use on some of my friends back in college days. |

I had a co-worker(an oxymoron being a stateworker) that we used to check him daily by putting a mirror under his nose to see if he was still breathing. When he died, he missed turning into the underground parking under the building. If he would have made it his family would have gotten twice his state life insurance payoff for dying on the job. I think he was catholic and we didn't hit on the forehead with a silver hammer but tonight, I think I might hit my wife on the forehead with a silver hammer. |
