You might consider a plate frame that reads: "Just because I can Doesn't mean I do" You do realize now that if you ever retire that plate that your grandson gets it, right? |

and his tire is nice and square, with chicken strips wide enough to land a jet!! |

The tire is toast..too many wheelies & burnouts. The chicken strips are about 1/4" wide on both sides right now. No matter what I have done on the street I have not been able to get rid of em...ask Dave how frickin hard it is to do with a 190 tire. |

If you ride a lowside all the way down, that'll work. Of course, you'd have to do it on both sides, and it would probably be much more expensive than fine sandpaper... Less effort, though. |

Screw that, new Diablos on the way & track day with Dave is in 10 days..new tires will be well scrubbed in by the end of it. Sucks living here in the SE part of the state...no decent turns at all. Lotsa flat straight high speed 5hit tho. Its fun but the damn middle of the tires wear out & you still have 3500 miles of good rubber on the sides |

hah!!! knew i would get you to admit it!!! you measured!!!!! still not buying it. three years carpentry tells me i know 3/8s when i see it. for more accuracy, hold the 1" line on the edge of the tread instead of the end of the tape. any guy could have a ten inch pecker if he measured it himself, its all about where you start/stop! im sure youve figured out by now im just givin you a hard time. chicken strips mean nothing to me, all it takes is a good corner or two to get the edge over, really has no bearing on rider ability or riding style at all IMO, corner clearance and tire profile pretty much dictate the strip width. |

I once got out of a ticket because I had what the officer referred to as "sensible rider" strips. I suppose I could have called it profiling (no pun intended), but it went my way so I kept my mouth shut. Maybe I'm too sensible. I made sure I got rid of them the next day. At this point, I have less chicken strip on my FRONT tire than dyna does on the back, and none on the back . Metzeler Sportecs BTW . |

Whats weird is there are no strips on the front tire at all. That 190 is huge frickin lump of rubber. And the M1's we were comparing a few weeks back, for some reason a 180 M1 is narrower than a 180 Dunlop. You would think they would be the same, but nope. |

Hey Dana, you remember a few weeks ago when there was a thread on the XB board about tires, and someone said that a switchover made the bike harder to wheelie? and we were theorizing how much shorter a tire got when it was well rounded? i did remember to make a profile out of wire, to compare an old 207 to a new 208. i would assume the tires start really close to the same. anyway, i found the new one to be about 7/16" or 3/8" taller, so maybe a math whiz can figure out the difference in final mechanical advantage. |

"Screw that, new Diablos on the way & track day with Dave is in 10 days..new tires will be well scrubbed in by the end of it." You might be suprised and find they are scrubed out by the end. I took the 02 Gixer to a 2 day track day at Phillip Island, 1st day run the stock Bridgeston's that only had 900 km of brake in running on them, toast by the end of 1 st day. 2 nd day went out on a set of scrubed in Pirelli Coarse and only got 3 or 4 street rides out of them after the end of track day. |

"And the M1's we were comparing a few weeks back, for some reason a 180 M1 is narrower than a 180 Dunlop." Narrower yes, but they are taller in the center so there is still 180mm of tread . They will put a larger contact patch down when leaned over, but less when standing up. Perfect for a lower HP bike if you ask me. |

Paul..the Corsas are a bit stickier but I went with the standard Diablos this time..I need a tire that works in the wet & according to the Pirelli folks the corsa isnt suited for it as well. Blackhawk isnt real hard on tires & it was just repaved last year. With my X1 the 207's got worn right to the edges & the rubber balled up a bit but they lasted for 4000 miles + 3 track days. |

Ken, is that 3/8ths overall difference in overall height or a 3/8ths difference just in the profile? Did you measure circumference or profile? |

i bent some wire, a coat hanger, to match the profile of my wore out one, still on the bike, then did the same with the new one, on the bike, and cut it at the edge of the tread. the difference in profile was 3/8". so the radius of the tire would be 3/8" shorter, and the diameter would be 3/4" different. sounds like radical numbers, but thats what i got. |

Thats what I was wondering. Actually I could believe the 3/4" cause when I was comparing Dana's M1 on his XB to the tire on Coolice's XB...I think he had a Dunlop, cant recall..but that M1 looked skinny & tall compared to the Dunlop. Checked out the gap between the swingarm & the tire & the M1 definitely had a much wider space. They work great & maybe part of the reason is the taller profile? Plus with a bigger tire as far as height/circunference goes, it would certainly make wheelies a little harder. I wonder how much difference it makes on the speedo? |

alright, i found a site with a speed calculator, given Dunlop's numbers for 208 dia (170 60 z r17) of 24.96", speed at 4000 rpm is 82.16mph in fifth. with a 24.21" dia tire, speed is 79.69. so the difference is about 2 and 1/2 mph at 80. not a big deal. the difference is closer to 2mph at 60. speed with the new tire, 24.96 and 27/60 pulleys at 3000 is 61.62, whereas with the 24.21 tire, it is 59.77. now, speed with 26/60 gearing and a new 24.96 tire is 59.34. so, going from a new tire to an old one, is comparable to dropping a tooth in the front pulley, thus making the bike easier to wheelie. all the calculations and theories of a dumb kid, so take with a grain of salt, or correct me. |

Dyna...That is one cute plate, but good luck talking your way out of a ticket or even hoping for a warning ticket with that one. Stealth is cool and our motto is "When Incognito, do as the Cognitians Do." Looks like you missed that class and will be turning into a Sh_t Magnet. A title formerly bestowed on a friend out west by the cops because of his record and that he seldom got a ticket for below 135 MPH and he tried to fight every one of them. Unsuccessfully, I might add. Oh well, Dave learned his lesson well. He is 67 now and his last ticket (this spring) was for 99 MPH. The cop gave him a break as 100 is the magic number for a bus pass out west these days. What you do on your own is one thing and I could care less. Just remember when you are leading the rides with other skilled enthusiasts that you may be riding a PACE too fast for the rest of the group. Sure, they will keep up via adrenaline, but their stamina may not be up to your level and you could be leading someone into an incident you both will regret. End of lecture. |

Ask Cindy on her Blast how I lead rides. I dont ride any faster than the group wants. The group will basically dictate how fast the leader will travel. I even ask at the stops if the pace is ok & is everyone comfortable with it. If not then we tone it down a bit. Bout the only thing I need to do more often is pull over at rest areas so the wimmen folk can go pee. Seems like thats their only gripe..I could just ride & ride & ride till im on fumes before I pull over. BTW..aint worried one damn bit about the plate & getting tickets. If I get 1 I pay it & move on...no biggie. |
