Am I the only one with this prob??? I've had my XB12S for about a month. The 2nd day I had it,my left mirror loosened up so much that it twirled while riding. Took it straight to my dealer and they had to replace it. Just went out for a ride right now and the same thing happened to the right one! Is this common for this model?? Put loctite on it for now till I get it to the dealer 2morrow afternoon. I know it's not the worst that can happen but it's really pissing me off!

Bar end mirrors was my solution.
I never liked the "mickey mouse ears" any how.

ditto.. I belive the XB'"S" models have the same type mirrors as the Tubers. And mine did the same thing, i would tighten them up and prolly 2 weeks later, they would usually turn on me when i needed to use them to pass some dummy. So i bought some nice Bar end mirrors. There is a nice size selection of bar ends, and the best part is, you don't have to move your shoulders to see behind you anymore....

The hold down/collet that grasps the mirror stock is of the single acting type, meaning it only closes on one end. So if the stock is smaller than the collet I.D. (which it is, by about, 0.006) It will only tighten over/around a very small area that will be visible as a contact ring around the mirror stock.

Another problem is the top of the tall acorn looking nut is to long, contacting the shoulder of the mirror stock and not allowing it to fully seat in the collet.

On mine, I used a piece of 0.003" shim stock to correct the fit and shortened the nut by the right amount so it would fully set in the holder/collet. Hope this explanation helps others fix their annoying problem too.

P.S. When I had the nut in the lathe to shorten it I also turned off the hex portion and pressed on a 1 3/4" aluminum collar that I can now tighten/untighten by hand to pull the mirrors in out of harms way when it's called for. With those mods, it takes very little tightening by hand to keep the mirrors rock solid and they may even be a little less prone to vibrate.

I backed the mirror out a full turn then tightened the collet while holding the mirror in place with my hand. After that I never had a problem with either mirror coming loose at all.

I have a 2003 XB9S... and the handle bars should be the exact same. The plastic bar end plugs need to be pulled out, they are glued in. Grab them with pliers and wiggle them free. The right side you need to trim the plastic tube the throttle grip is on about 1/8th inch +- for clearance... can be done with a box cutter... no biggie... this can be done without taking it off, I am sure any bar end mirrors would require this. They mount by a rubber plug going into the bar end and an allen bolt is tightened to cause it to expand. The mirrors can be pivoted out 45 degrees or even 90 degrees beyond what the photo shows, or pivoted in 45 degrees for clearance for a tight doorway into a storage area to keep the mirrors from hitting or being bumped. I had to trim the ball on the clutch lever for full clearance to get the clutch lever full in travel... used a dremel tool and a sanding drum. Petty stuff.
