I’ve got a 2001 M2 with about 3200 miles. Looks like I’ll be changing the rocker box gaskets sometime in the future. I’m trying to decide if I should take that time to change the cams.

My bike is stock with a forcewinder air cleaner and re-jetted stock carb. It has the stock muffler.

I’m thinking of the Screaming Eagle bolt-in cams (.497). I live in the Nevada high desert. Wide open spaces and cruising speeds of 70 to 80 mph. I rarely hit the red line.

I don’t want to kill the torque of this motor but some higher end grunt would be nice.

What do ya think?

Will I get some benefit with these cams with the stock muffler or should I figure on a performance muffler too?

You'll lose some bottom end torque...which will come back on the top end. A Mikuni carb will probably dial the bottom back in. The full benefit from the cams will come with a 'race header and the race muffler'.

A session on a dyno machine should even it all out.

you will have a lot of fun on a very quick M2!!!

Cliff, do the cams bro, seriously. i put andrews N8s in mine, and they are tremendous. .500 lift, but more duration and timing than the SE cams. the bottom end torque is not missed cause with these cams, you arent in the bottom but for a very short time. i used to rev mine out just to hear it, cause revving out before was kinda pointless with stock cams, and now, the power just keeps building, and its addictive. totally different animal, and these are a bolt in as well. just make absolutely sure the cams dont bind, or you could lose HP. a dealer or a shop prolly wont take the time to, but stone and lap the cams till they are loose and spin free. i just did mine, so if you do, and have any questions, shoot me an email. if you are going to do the rocker boxes, might as well do the cams cause you have to take the boxes off to do cams anyway. besides, my cams were wearing VERY poorly after 10k miles anyway, so im glad i swapped cams, performance aside. im hoping to get a dyno tune soon, so i can show the performance gain.
the dealer i have always gone to, for dyno tunes as well, pissed me off today, so i am looking for a new place to give my money to. my dealer doesnt even stock plug wires for buells. PLUG WIRES for Gods sake. they always have to order shit, and im sick of it. Lacrosse Area HD, as well as winona, can kiss my ass. im hoping for mid 90's RWHP, as i was at 85 before the cams.

DO THE CAMS, and at least a slip on exhaust. you wont be sorry. shoot me an email, i might be able to get a deal on the N8's or N4's (supposedly the same as the SE cams)

Your milage is low, but you might as well drop the oil pump and look up in there with a small flashlight and check the oil pump drive gear if you are going to have both rocker boxes off anyway.

It only costs you an extra gasket (oil pump gasket, maybe $1) and an extra 20 minutes or so. To replace that gear, you have to pull the cam cover, which means you pull the rocker boxes.

The gear is probably fine though. Even the problem ones are not failing until 15k or more miles, and most have no problem.

Ken's correct, you're just moving the torque around in the power band.

And ya, once you get a taste for the new power band, you'll never notice the loss on the bottom because you'll be out of it VERY QUICKLY!

Judging from my own experiences with a 99M2, cruising at 80 will be cake...want icing? Twist it on!

I would consider the SE high performance cams with .536 lift. You would need to change valve springs I believe. But, they are great cams, don't need roller rockers, & produce very good torque curves without loosing much at low rpm. Take a look at some of the dyno charts in the knowledge vault. They would probably work well with stock exhaust as they work very well with SE exhaust on Sportsters.
