Is there a real advantage of using the Dynojet or Yost jet kit over just changing the pilot jet and drilling the idle mixture screw cap and setting it to the specs on the carb forum ? How much of a difference does the new emulsifier tube make that comes with these kits ? I'm getting a bit of detonation at moderate rpms(2500-3500) at low throttle settings (1/8 turn). No hesitation so I'll check the timing out first. BTW this is for a cv40 carb.
Thanks for the info.

Ken,

I was getting a lot of pinging on my 98 S3 which is stock except for the air filter. The dealer tried retarding the timing which alleviated the pinging a little but also lost some power overall. Because this didn't solve the pinging, I had them reset the timing back to stock and I played with the jetting until the pinging went away. Here's what I ended up with: ASB Hi Flow air filter, 48 slow jet, stock NOKK needle shimmed 0.080", stock 200 main, accel pump chamber hogged out, TorqueMaster Spark Plugs, SE coil. The bike doesn't ping at all now and has instant throttle response which is good for riding two-up around SoCal.

As far as a Yost or DynoJet kit, I installed a Yost in my 96 S1. It made a big improvement in performance over stock, but it's also more sensitive to altitude and unfortunately thirstier than stock, getting around low 40's. I probably should but haven't tried fine tuning the setup to fix the altitude & mileage things, so YMMV. <IMG SRC=">
