It's quite entertaining to see all the Windows people hate on Macs - mostly it's due to either a deep insecurity in their choice, or a complete lack of experience actually using both operating systems.

The aforementioned is a pretty funny interpretation, I am in the IT industry and have ohhh I don't know about 5-10 people around me that have the IPhone. On certain days, all of a sudden they break out in a Star Wars dual with the light saber sound and they start mock fighting wheeling their IPhones like light Sabers. Oh, you know what I am talking about don't you MAC.

WTF over? Friggin MAC People...

Jon, I tried the hackentosh thing a few years ago when the osx86 first came out, didn't have any luck, i have been meaning to give it another shot. I remember back then it was very picky with the hardware, and nothing I had worked. I have been thinking of picking up a refurb mac mini so I can mess with things better, but after research I found out my keyboard and monitor are not compadible. Still thinking of getting it anyway.

Slowride, I got a program on my Windows phone, it uses the G sensor and every time I jump it makes the Mario jump sound from Super Mario Brothers. I love to leave it running in my pocket : )

Ok, really, who let all these Windows people in here? Next thing you know, we're going to be invaded by Gixxer, Hayabusa, and Ninja riders...

You will love the Mac. Especially if you like photo/video/creative stuff novice to pro. It also make for a great machine for the family/web.

My 2 cents:

Buy refirb direct from apple. (I scored a new old stock 24" iMac for 40% off retail. I got a demo eMac for 60% off w/ free apple care both with full warranty)

Don’t buy apple upgrade ram or upgrade drives. They are stupid expensive. Buy your own. Most machines come with plenty out of the box.

Best deal, full warranty, new, old stock.

I never buy the apple care extended warranty unless it is a note book. If it’s going to break it will be in the first 90 days of you standard 1 year warranty.

Barker,

Mac mini 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (previous generation)

1GB memory
80GB hard drive
Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 memory

$479, I think thats including my edumication discount, still $400 more than what I want to pay, but how is that price? I don't see a returd model.

Froggy,

Skip the Mac mini... For what it is it is very overpriced.

If you are looking for a cheap machine, just get a 2nd hand macbook.

There is a strong rumor floating around that apple is going to introduce a 17in imac to the education market for under $900.
That is going to be a hot little number if/when it comes out.

Yeah, the Mini was just updated, but it's still like the forgotten stepchild of the Mac line. We bought one for my father in law, who had never used a computer at all, because he really didn't need much computing power. He likes it, but the only reason I'd get one is to act as a web server or some other application where all it needs to do is sit there.

I got a mini and plugged it into my old Dell display and plugged in a keyboard and it was good to go. It has been running 24/7 for over a year and I have really like it.

I don't like laptops - rather have a BB for travel and a desktop and possibly an Apple Touch for browsing on the couch.

These days they basically are. They use PC components, except in a more shiny case. One of my biggest complaints years ago was how nothing inside was the same as a PC, and if something broke you had to replace it with a Mac specific part that costs more than the PC equivalent. They have been slowly phasing it out, and now these days I want to say the motherboards and power supplies are Mac specific. But that is no different than some Dells that use model specific motherboards and power supplies. Now that Apple uses X86 based Intel processors they destroyed the last major barrier, and you can install Windows on a Mac and OSX on some PCs.

Anyone mentioned Pystar yet, they make Mac Clones. On that note, I installed ObjectBar and WindowsBlinds on my XP and looks almost like OSX. Still can't figure out how to work my friends Imac pro tho, all the windows zooming in and out.
