So the power may be out at my house for 3 to 5 days. I need a generator.... I need to run 3 sets of tire warmers when I'm at the track. I NEED A GENERATOR!! Its time to buy. The wife is on board because we live in BFE and without power, we got nothing... The big thing is no water. SO.... I need to get a generator that will do some good around the house the next time the power goes out and it needs to run at least 3 sets of tire warmers when I go to the track. What watt should I buy?? did I just say what what? | ||

Since Buell doesn't make one, go with a real honda. Not a honda powered something, but a honda. I have a EU1000 that weighs nothing and provides 1000 clean watts (inverter tech.) The 2000 may do you and is also small, light and QUIET. They have guides online to tell you how much power you need for your purposes. The cheapies work but are loud rattle boxes. | ||

I know someone who bought one of the smaller Hondas for thier travel trailer and liked it, and it was super quiet. Also used it to run some stuff in the house after a bad storm for a bit. | ||

You can barely hear the Honda run, and it will last FOREVER. If you buy anything buy a Honda buy your whole family some earplugs. | ||

Mark, unless you plan on doing a couple hours of driving, you're going to be VERY limited in selection. Everywhere around here is completely sold out. | ||

If you buy anything but a Honda buy your whole family some earplugs. and some for your neighbors. Used to be so quiet and dark after a hurricane, now you get neighbors with the rattle trap generators. I have one too (5500watts, bought before honda) and use it during the day, but I did a lot to quiet it down and try to place it where the sound gets killed rather than travel. And no matter how many times the news point it out, we still get idiots running the gens in their homes or garages or too close to a window. I know everyone here is smarter than that but thought I'd mention it. Better to have the thing stolen or rained on than to die. (Message edited by miamiuly on September 15, 2008) | ||

I have done some calling around and you are right Mr. Mike.... nothing left in these parts.... I will have some time to do some research while I'm at "Work" A 220 plug will be a must to run the well pump. | ||

Honda all the way. We bought one in 1999 before Hurricane Floyd came through. We were without power for over a week. We ran the freezer/fridge (alternating), TV, lights, fans, etc. Ours also has a 220V. From 1999 we didn't start in again until maybe 2004 and again until last week when Hanna came through. Started without any issues. I'll get Carlos to post more about size, model, etc. I think I paid $500-$600 back in 1999. | ||

Wolf - we were fortunate that we only lost water for a 1/2 day when Floyd came through. I learned very quickly that I could live without power much longer than I could live without water....of course, the generator provided us some comforts in life. | ||

The real cool thing about this whole deal is my place of employment. Its a family business... none of the family is here.... They are taking care of their homes and families... I'm so glad I can be here AT WORK making money for the hive..... not so much as a, "How are things at your house?" | ||

The big thing is no water. I'm assuming you're trying to run a pump. The pump will probably be rated in horse power. 1 HP = 746 Watts. Also, starting a motor requires more power than running it. Figure a factor of 2 for that. Just info for your back pocket. | ||

3 sets of warmers? Sounds like you ought to get the other guys to chip in too! Kragen has a 1500W (something like that) no-name Chinese - that has a boss on the end of the muffler that you can add on an additional silencer if you're good a fabricating. It is NOT as quiet as the Honda. We have used it racing for 4 years now, but you really have to do some more muffling if you're going to be in a residential area. Out at the track, it's acceptable but not nearly as nice as the Honda (or Yamaha or Kawi) For 3 sets of warmers, you're going to need on the order of 2500 watts and then ONLY if you don't start all 3 sets of warmers at once. Otherwise, you're going to need like a 3000W generator but check the warmer labels. | ||

I have a 1,500 watt inverter and a rack of 5 deep cycle,12V batteries.The batts are take outs from walk behind fork lifts....10 cents a pound......or $5.50 each. More than enuf to run the fridge and the wood burning boiler system. Not sure how long a charge will last,but it aught to be WAY cheaper than the $40/day to run my (eBay,used once and for cheap) Coleman 3,00 watt generator. | ||

You can't go wrong with a genuine Honda IMHO. I like Generac and will have one forever  We've always had power issues and not having one isn't an option. | ||

We have a bunch of Honda's at work... I'm partial to our older diesel gennys... Longer Life span and safer to refuel... Diesel fuel has a longer shelf life... You get a much longer run time with a diesel too.. All the the Back up building generators for the city I work for are Diesel.. (Message edited by teddagreek on September 15, 2008) | ||

Mark, with the extended warranty work we found that Hondas and Generac is about the best you can get. Both have extensive service networks throughout the country and are both commonly used in RVs/travel trailers. We got hit pretty good, lost a LARGE 6" diameter branch in the side yard. It fell OVER a power line, but didn't touch it. Lost a few large branches in the front yard too. No power outage though, good luck! | ||

Mark I have an older generac generator. It is probably 15 years old. Just just fine 4kw with 5.6 kw surge. I would figure out how many amps the important stuff in your house consumes. You mentioned a well pump, how about your furnace and fridge. I would size it so you can run all those things at once. I would loan it to you but it is currently running. I have the same restore estimate of 2-3 days. $2300 bucks for a honda ouch. Hey Mark We have two of the 2000W Honda gensets at work and I can vouch for the abuse they'll take. You can run them in parallel to get almost enough to run a small ac unit. LMK if you have no luck getting one soon, I can borrow one from the shop, think I'll be in Athens soon (my belt finally came in). I bet it'd be possible to strap one on the Uly... HONDA absolutely ! I have a 7000W that is some sort of super quiet system and it's extra clean juice so that I can run fine electronics off of it. It cost 4 G's but I know it's more than powerfull enough and it will outlast me. | ||

I have a Honda EU3000IS that easily runs two sets of tire warmers at a time and has a 220 plug. Like the posts above, it is very quite and runs all weekend on 3 gallons of gas. It's the only way to go! | ||

Check marine supply places. Boat generators are quiet by design, come in both gas and diesel and in a whole bunch of sizes. You will have to fabricate a cooling system probably. | ||

You should have heard the place when I walked in. It was like a shark frenzy. "THEY ARE ALL SOLD!" "WHAT ABOUT MODEL #XXX?" "GOT TWO LEFT!!" "HOLD ONE!!" It was NUTS! I was less than a mile away from the shop when the salesman called me all worked up... I told him I would be there in less than 5 min. But he kept on trying to get my info over the cell phone. I told him I would be right there and hung up.... I almost didn't get one! It ran all night on less than 3 gal-o-gas. |
