I use to live in PA, in Sprintcar country and i miss going to williams grove friday nights. Lebanon valley speedway is having lucas oil sprintcar series this friday night. I am riding the new firebolt to the races looking for any fellow up state or surrounding area BadWebbers who would like to go. If anyone cares to go we would need a place to meet. Somewhere near Troy, NY would work. Anyone interested let me know i'm going no matter what. |

Paw, that's not upstate, that's mid-state. Up-state is Plattsburg across to Buffalo! Sorry, but I just had to comment. Hope you have fun at the races! |

Right, New York is divided into three parts: New York City, Long Island, and Upstate. Don't see why there's so much confusion over that! |

Scarsdale is neither New York City nor Long Island so that only leaves "Upstate," Cruisin... |

I went to school in Westchester (PACE Pleasantville) . Various people from Da City referred to our campus as being Upstate or the Country. You want a bigger argument, try saying someone from queens is from Long Island (That one always confused me..) It all all a matter of perception. Me living near Albany, but being born on Long Island, have always reffered to this area as upstate, as when we would come up in the summers(before moving). it would be we are going upstate for the weekend. But to the People that live up there near the CA border. We are seriously downstate... |

Upstate is used to refer to anything aside from NYC or Long Island. Try going to Kansas (like I just did) and explain that you live in New York, but not in New York City without using the term "upstate". The locals' heads explode. At the same time, I do refer to anything south of the Albany area to be downstate. (Message edited by xl1200r on September 03, 2008) |

Here's a geography lesson: West of New York City is New Jersey, some other States, and California. South of New York City is Florida. North of New York City is Upstate and Canada. Any questions? |

Well, now I'm educated into the geography of NY. I can deal with that. I had a really hard time back in college when I would chat with people out west. "Vermont? What state is that in?" "It's not a city, it's a state" "What? Where?" "Between New York and New Hampshire" "No, it goes New York, New Hampshire, Maine...never heard of Vermont" "...sigh..." |

General George Meade. Isn't Joseph Hooker famous for more than his logistical skills? Living in Upstate New York farm country, I get the NYC confusion all the time. "What Borough is Rush?" |

Many years ago while riding the IRT #1 home from work one Monday evening, a few young boys got on the train in Harlem. I heard them discussing what they had done for the weekend. One boy said to the other boy that he had gone to the "country" on Saturday afternoon. When the other boy asked where he had gone, the first boy said Van Cortlandt Park. For those unfamiliar with NYC geography, Van Cortlandt Park is in the Bronx. It's all a matter of perspective, eh? BTW, contrary to what Long Islanders will tell you, Upstate begins with Putnam County. Westchester is like the 6th borough of NYC. |

Uh.....I lived in the(seemingly forgotten) Southern Tier of Ny for three years. We raced Super Late Models, Sportsmen(now E-Mods), Limited Lates and Street Stock. We did have the occasional invitational for Sprints. I used to go to the NY State Fair Grounds for the annual Open Wheel Modified Invitational in Syracuse. But I don't know what named sector of the state that was in. |

Now there's another one " Southern Tier". I live there too but what does it mean? Isn't "the city" farther south. I think Southern Tier is a term used by local news when talking about south of Buffalo. When I tell people where I am from I say Western NY, That is the opposite side of the state from "the city". |

As a New York native whose ancestry goes back to well before the revolution, and as the president of a NYS-incorporated historical society (no shh1t) I can assure you that the expression "upstate" pertains to all of the empire state outside of NYC. NYC is defined by that area served by NYC municipal services. If your local police and fire dep't. are NYPD and FDNY, respectively, you're in NYC. |
