Well here's the thing, we got a new puter at a good price (nephew's in the biz) as the old one was getting cranky & the fan made more noise than a Buell!
This new one is the nuts, dual processors & all that, I won't bore you all with the spec as I don't understand it myself.
The thing is this one's on Vista, so when I connected my HP scanjet 5300c scanner, nothing happened.
Soooo went to the HP site, driver downloads, what's your operating system? Vista.
Nope, don't do it not going to do it, go buy a new one.
Here's their actual message.

We are sorry to inform you that there will be no Windows Vista support available for your HP product. Therefore your product will not work with Windows Vista.
If you are using the Windows Vista operating system on your computer, please consider upgrading to a newer HP product that is supported on Windows Vista. HP has numerous products on the market that support Windows Vista.

Are they taking the piss? I've got a perfectly good scanner that works very well that I can't use, because they're too f*****g idle to write a program for it, & they want me go buy another of their products?
I THINK NOT!!!

If this is HP customer service they can stick it up their corporate arse.
I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANY MORE OF THEIR PRODUCTS.

Apparently vuescan will run the thing, but it grips me to have to pay a 3rd party to use a product I already own because it's manufacturer has a piss poor attitude to it's customers.

I think HP SUCK!!!!!

Flame off.

It's vista that sucks.

HP drivers are a bloated pile of crap that stay resident in memory all the time anyways.

Get XP professional. (NOT 64bit!!!)

Natex gonna have to disagree with you on Vista. Works fine on the correct hardware. I use it daily with minimal issues.

I will agree that HP PC's are horrible and the software packages that come preloaded are a bit excessive.

It's all about money. My Dell 2005 came with a printer and paintshop. Try buying genuine Dell ink from Wal*Nards or Office Max...not going to happen. It's either eBay or get well hosed by Dell online. Paint shop expired and you have to rebuy it to keep it. Odd,my 2000 computer with the exact same program never expired.....always a way to get more of your money after the sale. Notice your cell phone update messages from the cell phone company are VERY slow and distint.........to get more of your minutes burned up. Free ATM cards from your bank..........a year later they start charging you 2 bucks for each transaction.

+1 its about money. Some companys are better than others with legacy products. HP's business products are mostly compatible with vista. We have a 15 year old HP Laserjet 4 printer that works fine in Vista. My 4 year old HP photosmart 7660 isn't Vista compatible, but you can kinda hack it to work with the photosmart 5600 driver.

GO Linux!

I use Windows and have for years, work you know. BUT started using Linux years ago. Yes it can be funky to learn BUT once you understand it a bit you finds it can do MORE than windows. AND best of all it ranges from FREE to no much and loaded with apps that would cost a pile from Microsoft.

BUT you do have to be careful of the hardware you buy as some just plain will not work.

BTW Microsoft did the same thing when XP first came out all kinds of programs and hardware went belly up...including some of Microsofts stuff.

I'm sorry, it just gets me that they have updated products to work on successive windows operating systems, but won't do it for Vista because your product is now (in their eyes) too old & not worth it so they tell you to buy a new one.

If any of the motor manufacturers came out & said, Oh anything over 5 years old is old hat & we're not going to make any parts available for them, would you be faithful to that brand?

Damn right you wouldn't!

I own a 1968 Dodge truck, I can still get most parts off the shelf in the US, & it's 40 years old for f***s sake.

So sure I'll continue to buy Chrysler products.

But HP? don't piss up my back & tell me it's raining!

They can go sit on something sharp!!!!!

VISTA SUCKS!

I destroyed a perfectly good, brand new Lexmark printer because Lexmark did not have a driver for Vista.

+1 Birdy.

I've got a 10-year old Pentium III machine running Mepis Linux just fine. It's actually faster than my 3-year old Dell running Windows XP with double the memory and about 5 times the clock speed.

Linux may be fine for you guys that know what you're doing, but for the average dummy like me, i go with the evil empire, because that's what's easiest.

When I upgraded from 95 to XP my scanner quit working. It was made by microtek. Went to their website. No XP drivers for that scanner. So, I had to buy a new scanner. I DID NOT buy microtek.

My new computer is a Mac.

Mr_grumpy, that may have been true in the pass but now Linux is easy to both install and use. I put it on a machine I built for a friends mother. She wanted a computer to surf the web, E-Mail and write letters on. I guess is a 85+ lady can get with it anyone can!

Try buying genuine Dell ink from Wal*Nards or Office Max

That's because you need to go to Staples to buy Dell ink.

Unless you are an Uber Gamer, there is really no reason to use Winblows Vista. XP Pro supports multiple processors and DirectX 9.0c is just dandy by my reckoning. Personally, I like to use:

As an Uber Gamer, i love Vista. XP feels old, clunky and obsolete. Linux will not run any of my programs, and i don't feel like getting my Warcraft account banned from an emulator.

May i ask what model? Everything made within the last 2 years regardless of who makes it is Vista compatible. (except for a few retarded things here and there)

HP computers seem to have taken a step backwards since they hooked up with Compaq.

+1 on Mac. When my current ($400 Gateway with XP Pro) laptop decides never to boot up again, to the Apple store I go : )

Bill Gates is the devil. He and his overstuffed pockets bring new meaning to the term "planned obsolescence".

And Mr Grumpy: +1 on good, ol' Mopars : ) My '72 Satellite wagon and '85 D350 salute you!
