What is the nature of the discomfort? You may just have to work through this logically.

For me, discomfort on the M2 was initially the seat. That was essentially a case of it being to soft and small and that caused my buttocks to put pressure on the nerve bundles in the glutes. It was quite painful after 45 minutes or so. A firmer seat with a little wider seating area fixed that (a Corbin Gunfighter seat).

I was also feeling some discomfort in the hip joints and knees. In summary, old age is hell but it is better than the alternative. I decided that I had outgrown sports bikes and started looking at cruisers.

I eventually moved on from the Buell M2 to a Dyna FXD. That gave me a more "seated on" and less "crouched atop" riding position and it was much more comfortable.

It also brought with it a set of forward mounted highway pegs (not forward controls!) and the option of occasionally changing my foot and leg positions.

All in all, the Dyna has been the solution to keeping me comfortable on the bike and for much longer periods of time.

Watch out for bikes with only forward controls, those may bring issues of discomfort from the forward only position. If you a rider that likes to move around on the seat a little and use your weight to change and control the balance, the forward controls will not work as well as the mid controls/highway pegs combo.

If you were looking for a sportster with comfort, you should have started with an 04 or later model that has the rubber mounted motor, longer frame, heavier weight and bigger back tire, +1 if you get the bigger 4.5 gallon tank. A good seat goes a long ways, but demo the newer one. I think you find a vast improvement

Didn't you read my post about how I traded in my CityX for a Nightster, and a month later traded the Nightster in on my current Buell?

I did the same thing. Bought an 05 XB12S, traded it in on an 07 1200 Custom. I rode it for about 6 months and got another Buell...

Been doing "break in" miles on an 08 sporty 1200 for the dealership I work at. I'll NEVER get rid of my XB9R for one! Uncomfortable, doesn't handle the same, and has pretty poor brakes. Oh and the vibrations, it's worse than my blast was!

Yeah what a big mistake.
I am on my 4th seat 3rd set of bars, have tried every combination in between and it doesn't matter, monkey-ass after 30 miles is always the result. And don't get me started about my trip to Daytona, 3.5 hours of hell.
I've got alot of extra parts with the bike and I would trade it in a heartbeat for another Buell.

I rode to Daytona on Friday, went through 2 tornado's in Lake City. Really, had to pull over to wait for the trees to quit falling and it rained all the way there, and the rest of the day for that matter.

Post some pics of your Sportster and let us know what you're looking for Buellwise and what sort of price you have in mind on the XL. You never know what will appear out of the woodwork.

This is it, in this pic it has he regular Soprtster bars on it and a solo seat.
Right now it has some high narrow bars on it and the same seat but it's been cut down.
The bike is in nice shape and runs good.
The only thing with it is that I know it is running a little rich. As far as any other problems I don't know of any, I've only put about 2000 miles on it. I've got extra seats, bars, sissy bar, windshield bracket, saddle bag supports, and a front spoke wheel eith a good tire on it.
I would love to get back on a CityX but I can't spend any more $$$ with a baby on the way, but any 03+ XB would do the job, I always wanted a Firebolt. : )

Pics and parameters of what you're looking for always helps. Sounds like you're not going to be looking for a tube frame Buell.

I'd consider a tube-framer. I loved my M2
