The system is certainly screwy BUT it is the best system anyone has figured out yet. Sure beats getting put on the rack until you confess.

On the infrequent occasions that I have to resolve a contacting dispute, I always pick arbitration over litigation. Who in their right mind wants their fate determined by 12 people who were too stupid to get out of jury duty?
Before anyone gets angry, I've got two initials for you - OJ, American jurisprudence at its best.

people give you priceless looks when you show them your funny farm card

That's great if you dont want the right to purchase a firearm, at least, in the state of Maryland

Of the couple hundred of us there, not one person was ever called all day. You would think they would plan their days out better than that.

there is no way to predict how long a trial will last or how long a previous jury will deliberate. If jury duty isn't your thing, i don't think China or several of the middle eastern countries have jury trials. I bet you'd rather be inconvenienced for a day or two than one person deciding you're guilty of theft and chopping off your hand for allegedly stealing a candy bar with out a fair trial. now that would be inconvenient.

I would love to do jury duty as long as I get paid the same as the lawyers. After all, I am deciding a persons fate and that has to be worth more than the stupid ten bucks a day that they pay here. If I get called, my income is ten bucks a day...............period. Actually, I think they raised it to twenty bucks a day.......still the short end of the stick. Will the lawyers/judge and all the other people there work for twenty bucks a day???????

It's your civic duty. It's an integral part of being an American citizen.

My employer requested that I be excused from reporting to jury duty in February, but the county denied the request.

So I called the guy's phone# on the denial form and requested a summer date for JD and he agreed. We set it for late June when I'm done with the school year of teaching. I sure hope it rains those days so I won't miss the riding weather!

I just got a jury summons in the mail today.

My feeling on the subject is that if you have ever made an excuse to get out of jury duty, you have no right to complain when you hear about any outrageous judgments that other jury's make.

Jury duty sucks, just look at how you are treated when you arrive at the courthouse.

Find a cushy spot up next to the building where your vehicle will be safe, NO!! you're off hunting any available parking and the 4 block area around the courthouse is off limits or limited to 1 hour parking only.

Treated with the respect any criminal witrh a lawyer it tow is, NO!! you're put thru metal detectors and searches and made to wait in crowded rooms and moved from bin to bin with no explanation at all.

Simple cure for the ails fo the system. All jurors have the right to dignity and respect. It comes with the second amendment. Want people to care, carry a gun. Act like sheep and we will be treated like sheep.

Only half kidding on this.

Please...

I am upset at the inability of the court system to value MY time. If they need me fine, but let's not waste my time.

When a fresh group of jurors arrive in the morning, there should be a listing of what courts are in operation for that day.

If said court needs jurors that day, then early in the day get around to selecting them.

I understand if you get on a trial they have little control on how long it lasts, but that is not what I am upset about.

I sat around for 2 days doing nothing. The last day, not one single person got called for ANY trial.
You would think that they would have a nice little list that would inform them on what courts would need fresh jurors, right?

From others I have spoken to, California seems to have a better system. You at least get a phone number to call if you will be needed.

Here in WA I got to sit on my ass doing nothing.

Now something to make you laugh. Obviously this has been an issue in the past. They made a repeated point of mentioning that we were not allowed to consume alcohol. By the end of the day even I wanted a drink, and I rarely ever drink...
