I know we've been over this before but, my front cylinder has a noisy valve or both. Tick tick then speeds up with revs. I've put in synthetic oil and still heard it. I rode by a local HD dealer and one cat suggested a lifter possibly collapsing. 2002 x1 with 2700 miles. Could this be right or should I even worry? Bike runs extremely well. Long live tubers!

I noticed a huge increase in valve tic when I installed higher lift cams in both my FLHP (.569" lift) and my S2 (stock Lightning/Thunderstorm cams). From what I understand the X1 has some of the most agressive factory cams...so if it's just tic-tic-tic-tic, I'd let it go, it's just a function of stuff moving up and down inside a 3/16" piece of aluminum. If it's tic-tic-tic-clack...I'd look into it. Also performance will start to suffer if you do have a lifter collapsing.

I actually noticed more noise when going from dino to full synthetic on my M2...Keep riding her hard: )

Who was the 'cat' at the dealership that said it could be a lifter collapsing? If it was a mechanic or parts guy, take his comments into consideration.

There is a big difference between one valve making noise (if that's what it is) and all of them making noise, as Ratbuell eloquently pointed out (good description, btw). If it's a 'clack', it needs to be investigated, if it's a syncopated 'tick', it could be something as simple as a leaking exhaust gasket at the cylinder head.

The first thing to do is nail down where the sound is coming from. Take a large screw driver and use it as a stethescope. Place the tip on various locations on the cam case and your ear to the handle and you should be able to hear what's going on inside. If the 'clack' or 'tick' is louder near the cases, it could very well be a collapsing lifter or otherwise compromised valve-gear.

Thanks much. I did use a screwdriver as suggested and its coming from up top front cylinder. Still runs great. I dont have any buds with another to listen to theirs. No (clack) just tick when the revs pick up its quicker. I'm grateful for your help.

Mine was the same way went to a dealer ( I trust ) and he said its normal. We went over to another 1200 and started it up sounds the same.

make sure it is not an exhaust leak you are not hearing. The connection between the header and the muffler can sound like that also
