holy smokes! got home from work today, had taken the bike to work, took the dog out, and maybe 15-20 min. later i went back out to the garage to install this spiked lisc. plate cover (that turns out looks gay as hell) and while i'm turning the screws i hear a weird gurgling noise! this is almost a half hour after i got home! it's coming from the primary. i poked my head over by it and phew! i could feel the heat coming off that bad boy, hotter than a whores on payday! the primary cover was almost hot enough to burn skin and it sounded like the primary fluid was boiling!!! what a freaky discovery! the bike ran like a champ all day today, shifted fine, found neutral just fine. the rest of the bike was plenty cool, cylinders etc. anyone ever experience this? maybe they all do it but i've certainly never heard noise coming from my bike 20 minutes after i've ridden it, whoa

What primary fluid are you running, mobil 1? Does it stink?

Lift the back of the bike up in the air, and put it in neutral, and slowy turn the back wheel. Does it sound crunchy by the front sprocket?

i will reep, i'm using sporttrans harley brand. nothing stinks, everything otherwise seems perfectly normal. i'm going back out there now to lift the back up. i'm definitely pulling that bad boy apart this winter and rehabing everything in the primary, i've had minor problems for a couple years now (first seems to bang into gear if i'm not careful, always has i bought it used).

yep, it's fine (listening to the sprocket with the end in the air). i dunno i guess i'll take it for a short ride tomorrow after i check the fluid level. one thing that i've noticed is that it's very touchy about primary overfill, it becomes very bolemic all over my back tire if i'm not careful.

The stator is probably fine then, it would stink like crazy if that was it. I doubted that would stay that hot that long anyway.

The other possibility I was thinking of was trashed bearings in that 5th gear drive assembly. You might be able to do some inspection by popping off the dust cover inside the shaft on the front sprocket. If there is a rusty paste in there, you are on the right track.

That still does not make a lot of sense though. It's hard to imagine it getting hot enough to boil oil.

Thats a real stumper...

Bubbling may be moisture boiling off during post ride heat soak? Air being pulled in or forced out to/through the breather passages? Vaccum from crankase sucking air through shaft seal? Small alien critters living in your primary?

lol (bodywork)
well, bubbling heat soak and breather air is definitely what i heard it just freaked me out with the severity, it should have cooled and stopped breathing i would think after 20 minutes or so, it was cool out 55 degrees or so. i'm slightly horrified of reeps bearing 5th drive gear symptom however...
nate, remember at that last brag meeting i went to after i installed the chain drive? well, after a good 75mi. or so ride out to sheldons (two months ago, i've put a few thousand more miles on her since) when i got there somebody noticed a kinda thick caramel colored sludge that had dripped on the rear shock from the front sprocket area. freaked me out a little and happened once again and has'nt happened since, had it continued i would have pulled the front sprocket and sealed that puppy, i assumed the shaft seal had seated itself because it stopped leaking and i filled the primary twice and it all ended up on my back tire. hmmmn, i suppose ima hafta pull that there front sprocket and take a looksy! doh, figures i really wanted to paint my fork lowers this weekend!
thanks for the input folks

Could also just be a crank seal. The heat could be a red herring. If there is pressure in the crank case based on just where the engine stopped, would that bleed out the crank seal for 20 minutes?

I don't think you see much when you pull that dust cover, so while it might make you feel worse (rusty mud in there) it probably won't make you feel better.

hahaha, well i certainly don't want to feel worse!
now when you say crank seal is that the seal behind the bearings behind the sprocket shaft seal? lol, i suppose i better open the service manual tonight and get acquainted with the tranny, even if i'm just buggin over the pressure last night i still have that little matter of the bike slamming into first gear!
the excessive heat could also be a super tight primary chain? i better check that, i'm probably better off opening the primary and poking around then, i dunno. one good thing is, if i find out my tranny is screwed and i fix it the bike will practically be brand new and there should'nt be much that can go wrong after that, i've pretty much had all the classic tuber problems happen to me! eeh, whataya want i bought it used and abused, boston harley told me it had three previous owners, she just wants someone to take care of her, i'm tryin, one thing at a time!

Oops, by crank seal, I mean the one around the crank that isolates the pressure in the crankcase from the pressure in the gear box. If you pull the primary cover, it is under the magnet cup, right inside the stator winding assembly. Right around the crank.

You do not have to remove the stator to get at it. There is a special tool to seat it to the correct depth when you put it in, though rumor has it that green tinker toys can be made to install it if your son Jack is not looking and does not bust you.

I don't know how tight the crankcase is sealed with the engine at rest, I don't think it would be enough. I think it would just burp right out the umbrella valves in the heads.

I just brought that one up because you mentioned the bike easily spits tranny fluid. That's a classic symptom of impending crank seal failure, though as you state, overfilling the primary can do the same thing.

Both my Buells will make hissing noises after a ride. I think it may be wet sumping. It can go on well after shutting off.
