I've been eyeballing my S3T and it's getting ready for some serious offseason surgery. I'm wondering if chroming the frame is something within the realm of possibility...

Jay from Sheldon's has a wonderful S1. Its frame is nickel and it looks sick! He did a lot to that thing.

Wonder if there's a picture of Jay's S1 with the nickel frame somewhere?

I've had a X1 frame at Baltimore chrome for 6 months. Apparently with all the tubes it's a pain in the as# for them to do. Something about running wires from tube to tube to get it to stick right. I know absolutly nothing about the process, but it's more than dropping it into a vat. $1,350.00 and my fingers are crossed.

I always wanted to chrome an entire bike, tanks, pegs, exhaust, frame, everything. I love the sound of a chromed frame but am wayyyy to lazy to take my bike apart.

I had the frame chromed on my X1(see profile) for about $400 at a bumper plating/repair facility. finish was excellent. never had any problems with flaking.

very much in the realm of possibility.

Well Bomber, it is louder than stock but the real advantage is the reflectivity. Seeing how light moves at 186,000 miles per second reflecting all that mass in motion can boost speed. You will want to ride away from the sun or tack to the sun like a sailboat. It just seems to me that chroming an entire bike would be the most obnoxious thing I could do. It would make the perfect statement here in Philly. I won't do it to my Buell, maybe my Goldwing or my kids CB200.

My S1W frame was nickel plated in 1999. The finish today is slightly yellowed and that's what I expected. Call it seasoned if you will. If you look really close up and concentrate a sort of cloudy effect is noticeable 'under the skin'. This is no detriment to the finish or appearance, just a consequence of what can happen I believe when nickel plate ages.

More important, the nickel is not peeling or corroding. Not even in the hidden depth of some of the bracing around the headstock or the tubes it's more or less impossible to polish or prepare thoroughly around and under the battery tray area for example.

I think if I did it again I'd probably go for a chrome plate though. Either way it's better than paint. That said, if every tube frame Buell left East Troy with a plated frame I'd have probably stove enameled mine red!

There are several manufacturers that make a powdercoat that is chrome like. Here is one of them that I am considering using.

http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=14712&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C45 8%2C844%2C848&KickerID=313&KICKER

Interesting idea with the Powdercoat there Jim, but I don't know that it will work. I'm going to be painting the rest of the bike...maybe silver metallic and so the frame is almost going to have to be chrome to outdo that.

I suppose I could go black and chrome.

Anyone have any other thoughts on the direction to take this bling?

a friend had a sportster frame chromed for about 450.oo. 1600.oo sounds way high, i think i would check at some other places even if you have to ship it. I had an estimate on my honda rigid frame I'm building for a nickle plate, was only 600.00. the hardest part of plating is the polishing, the strip prep is not complicated.

Powder is cheap, lasts a long time. You could probably do frame, swing arm, and tubes for what ya'd pay for chromium plating on just the frame. Biggest problem I find is, getting someone to deliver show quality.

You should check into some of the new colors and textures. REALLY COOL SHNIZZIT.

I used a company here in Kansas City for the chrome by the name of:

Electro Bumper Plating
7100 E. 50 hwy
(816) 921-5965

I am still in their debt as they also found me a rear bumper for my 1967 El Camino for about a third the cost of a dented one off E-bay (only looked for one for six years).

Spidy-who did that, cause it looks damn good. Do you know if they offer a black chrome and what their rates are. I have seen prices from 150 if I stripped to 600 if they did it all for PC. Every guy I talked to about Nickel wanted at least 900.

Ceeee Jayyyyyy
Thats not chrome, that's powder coat.

The guy who owned the shop I got that done at used to race Buell's so he gave me the cousin Bueller discount.

To powder coat and jet coat the exhaust was 250.

175 for the frame and 75 for the exhaust.

Spidey, is your frame and exhaust powder coat or ceramic coat? Looks great either way, I had just heard powder coat didn't hold up well on exhaust. My x-1 header is ceramic, coated, i clean it with steel wool and 409, still looks great.
