If you're talking roadracing, the list could go on a long time with this board. Alot of mods done by this bunch.
Just guessing you have a stock X1, the first thing would be take off the plastic scoop and big air cleaner and replace it with a carbon ham can. Take off the tank cover and save it for resale later on, just put a piece of rubber between the bracket and the tank to hold the tank solid. Of course a race ECM and Force pipe. Remove all lights, speedo, left side handelbar switches. Install bellypan, number plates, and if you can find one, the race shock bracket.
That's about all you need to get out there and begin, Maybe chain drive conversion, rearsets (I made mine out of 1/4 aluminum plate and a drill) and clipons. You can go on forever, but that's the basics.
I gave it up last year and have a ton of spares rotting in the basement, mounted rain tires, clip ons, gearing, n' stuff. ping me if used will do ya, dougb123@att.net

I checked your bio and being from VA. you're going to need gearing for Summit or VIR.

You'l probably want to jumper out the safety crap like the clutch switch and the kickstand switch.
You're probably taking the kickstand off anyways, right?
XB jugs might get rid of more heat due to more fins.
I would think that heat is your greatest enemy here.

X1 is requires a little more work than others, especially clip on clearance with the wide EFI tank. You have to run them pretty splayed out. If you want to go nuts you can pick up an old S1 tank and run a external fuel pump/regulator, or convert to carb. Its a none issue if you are ok with the wide clip ons. Any 54mm clip on will work...I've heard rumors of some companies selling clip ons with the bars spaced a couple inches forward, allowing you to pull them in more. I don't have any personal experience with them. For me, the stock belt was a problem and I kept breaking them on aggressive (read sloppy...) downshifts. I converted to chain eventually. I switched to the old style S1 steel tube swing arm. You could modify the aluminum arm by notching it for chain clearance or run a monster front sprocket if you didn't want to change swingarms. You will need to do something with the pegs, as they will touch pretty quickly. I have a set of crossroads solo rear sets that use the stock peg if your interested... As stated before, the list can go on and on. Only other hint would be to keep up on brake fluid changes and get the absolute best brake fluid you can find. Fluid takes a beating in race conditions with that big single disc. Will boil very easily if it gets diluted with moisture at all. when I was running an X1, I was fully bleeding my brakes every weekend.

Fun bikes to race though...have fun and good luck!

Heres a picture of my old 1998 bike . I have the GSXR tail/seat conversion still I would sell if interested. Same as in picture but with white number plates. the crossroad rearsets are also visible.

Only time the grips were heated was usually due to friction with the racetrack surface! Used GPS all the time (Go Past Suzuki's)...

You should be able to find large diameter clipons for the X1 forks, just look around. You can measure the outside dia between the upper & lower clamps with a good caliper, just remember the forks are imports and you'll need the diameter in mm. Try Woodcraft, that's what I've got (M2 forks, much smaller dia.)

1. Remove, clean, and re-torque the stator nut on the end of the crank. I mean really clean it, with solvents that make you hear colors, like brakekleen & a toothbrush. Use new red loctite on reassembly.
2. New primary shoe.
3. Retorque exhaust header stud nuts, alot. Check often.
4. Your bellypan will crack. Get used to it, and learn to use fiberglass, metal plates, and epoxy to fix it. The well nuts that come with it from Buell can be had from MSC Industrial supply. I bought a whole box, ping me for the exact part number. Oh, and you'll NEED the bellypan. You're on a track, don't oil it.
5. The stock shock won't last long. I haven't run out of performance on it, but I have run out of ride height. The going vibe is to save your money for a Penske. The stocker CAN be rebuilt, and I might persue that as its alot less.
6. Safety wire, loctite, torque wrench, manual. The bolt you DIDN'T check will be between turns 4 & 5, where some enterprising gopher will use it as a doorstop.

Racerx1 what do you want for the rear set?I bought a set of the buell rear sets that appear to be just plates that use all the stock hardware. I'm not sure how they intended on mounting the rear break if you or anyone eles has had any exp. with these please let me know if I'm missing any parts.

C'mon Nate, its the same as mine, except I dont have the Gixxer tail....

Anyway, I am happy with the CrossRoads bars(lower than stock, a little high the actual clip ons...

I also have the CrossRoads solo rear sets...

Its aggressive enough to make hanging off, and sliding aruond the seat, more effecient, fun, comfortable, etc... and I am still able to ride it 500+ miles in a day(well, 6 hours)....

There are other things...red loc-tite, AND safety wire...

You will need to tape your lights up...or jsut get a race fairing....

Set it so its comfortable enough for you to toss around...but still in control... make sense?

I still ride mine everyday, its my primary transportation... So I dont think full clip-ons woudl have done it for me...
