Yo All from Philly! I bought the 26 tooth front pulley sprocket from Baker Drivetrain. I want more revs at the same speed for easier stop and go riding in traffic. It also improves torque a little bit which is always good. I read the service manual about reinstalling the pulley and it's really involved to tighten to 50 ft lbs and then rotate another 30 to 45 degrees to line up cap screws. It calls for a special tool to hold the sprocket and a tool to tighten the sprocket nut. Is this like overkill or what? What does the special sprocket tool to? Prevent stress to the tranny? Can I use a strap wrench around the pulley and do the same thing? Anyone put on a new front pulley and give me some guidance if I can do this myself or will I mess something up if I don't use the factory tools? Thanks Den 99X1

I cut my own pulley holder from 1/8" x 1" barstock. Just make it long enough to brace up against the frame or swingarm. I used an electric impact wrench to loosen it, took some time before it started spining the nut and remember it's reversed (left hand) threaded.
Putting the new one on was a breeze compared to removing the old one.

Thanks, can you tell me the purpose of the barstock? To prevent the pulley from turning? How did you connect the bar stock to the pulley? Did you do the 50 ft lbs and then 30 to 45 degree with Loctite 262 or just tighten it and install the cap screws? Thanks again...Den

purpose of barstock was to hold the pulley while trying to loosen/tighten the nut. The improvised barstock wrench has the teeth of the pulley cut into it's profile to hold the sprocket. Yes I did do the 50 then 45 degrees and then locktited the capscrews.

Other option is: get rid of the plate, drill holes in nut en bolts and use special wire to lock it.

I used an impact wrench to get it off and it went easier than I though it would. The improvement in driveability is nice, it lurches through school zones less and does easier torque wheelies at about 3/4 throttle from 3000rpm. I ended up cutting a piece of wood with a hole saw the size of the pulley then cut it in half to sandwich the pulley. I held it with a big C clamp and torqued the bolt. No Probelmo. Thanks..Den 99X1

How much top end do you lose with the "smaller" pulley. Something I've been thinking about but I'm already frustrated that 100 doesn't come easy. Not hitting 90 isn't an option!

100 doesn't come easy? On the main strait at Blackhawk Farms raceway I was hitting 110 with a 26 tooth front sprocket on my last track day. If you are having troubles hitting 100 you may have other issues.

I have had my bike up to 115 (which was probably 105 since the speedo is off due to the smaller sprocket) and had room to go. At the race track I was hitting 100 consistantly in the straits (and they are not very long) and never touched 5th gear.

Yo Easy, my bike will hit 100 as fast and easy as it hits 20. You're not on a Blast are you? At 70 if I roll back the throttle it will hit 100 in like 3-4 sec's top. In my state the speed limit is 65 anyway and I go too fast already so anything that slows me down is a plus. I figured that 140mph top end was way too much and I would rather have the stop and go drivebability. I am really happy with the 26 tooth and the loss of top end is about 8mph tops according to my calculations. You should get almost 5% more torque Enjoy the easier wheelies...Den 99X1
