How do you guys feel about the power commander on a 2001 S3T? Is it user friendly or does one need a engineering degree to dial it in? Is it a good (or at least equal) substitute for the race ECM?

Thanks,
Steve

I'll take that as a negative. LOL

Steve,
If all you are doing is bolting on an intake and exhaust system, skip it and put on a race ECM. After a TPS reset, you'll be good to go.

IF, however, you're gonna do head work, cams, displacement mods, etc, then a power commander is the way to go. But plan on adding $350 or more (and about 1/3 of the life of a rear tire) to the cost of the unit so that a tuning center can build a map for YOUR bike with YOUR combination of parts. If you aren't prepared to spend that money tuning it, do not put one on the bike.

We sell both the race ECMs and the power commanders at American Sport Bike. Power Commanders have been discontinued, but I have a small cache of them. You MUST run the Hi performance O2 sensor with it as well.

Al,
Would adding a race ECM to a stock 2002 X1 do anything for performance with the stock intake and exhaust? Should I just wait on getting a race ECM until I am ready to get the aftermarket exhaust and intake?

Getting the race ECM is the best money you can spend on your Buell. It will increase your performance even without any other mods. But in the meantime get yourself a K&N that fits inside your stock air cleaner housing also. It will run you about $40, cheaper on e-bay.

Nifty, thanks for the input. Just ordered a stock replacement K&N at my local H-D dealer.

Oh by the way I saw a Screamin Eagle aircleaner for a 1985-97(or thereabouts) carbed XL engine for $50. Also noticed behind the counter they had a S-1 logoed cover for it, didn't catch that price.

I don't know about fitment for my bike or others but I thought it worth mentioning.

My reason for asking is that our new to us 2001 S3T is having (from what I've read), the typical FI symptoms/problems. It is surging at slow speeds, hiccups steadily at about 3000 RPM, and falls flat on it's face at wide open throttle.
I'm taking in my 12R for 1000K service on saturday, and my wife will be taking in the S3T to have Danbury HD/Buell take a look.

Is there a solution to the FI problems or should I just go for the Race ECM? I thought the power commander might be something like the race ECM. I had no idea what it was and definitely will not be buying the PC.

I must add that aside from wide open throttle problem and the hiccuping, the S3T is pretty scary fast. It's got what I would describe as a more primitive power delivery (whatever that means LOL)than my 12R.

Thanks for your suggestions.

A customer came in the other day with a 99X1. Stock exhaust, home made forcewinder intake, stock ECM. It's been so long since I rode with a stock 99 ECM, I forgot how bad it was. stumbles and coughs in the 3000's were pretty consistent, and pickup just was pretty lame. Threw a race ECM on it, did a TPS reset with the Technoresearch SW, and WOW!! I forgot how dramatic the difference could be.

The later stock ECMs were better, the 99 FI was not fully baked. But I'd still be putting a race ECM on if I didn't have one on it.

Thanks for the reply. I'll talk to the techs about it and see what they say.

Just an aside, so far at least the customer service at Danbury has been very good.
