I've been thinking about swapping my steel swing arm on my 98 White Lightning for a Alum one from a X1-M2.

I need to know a few things.

What parts are needed from the donor swingarm?

Can i use my original axle?

I need the X1 Axle adjusters, right?

Rear Brake will bolt up fine?

Did B2Win do an article on the swap?

This is going to be my winter project..(one of them).

The other one is stuffing a 200cc two stroke single into my YSR 50. FUN!

Thanks, and any close up pics of the swap would be great.

Oh yeah. Do i need the X1 Mounting block, or can i use the one from my S1?

Mikey,answers to questions
original axle--yes,but need a couple washers as its a little longer
need X-1 adjusters--yes,need all adjuster parts.
rear brake bolted up fine on my S-2.
also rear fender is different shape to fit new contours
article--don't remember and mags are at work.
mounting block--no,but check yours for clearance by swinging complete arc before bolting up shock as some have issues with clearances and may need grinding.
Easy swap and looks great.

Yes, Battle2Win did do an article on installing the Aluminum swingarm on an S1. If you are interested in seeing the article, but don't have access to the issue, I could take some high resolution digital pics (so that the text can be read as well as the pictures in the article) and E-mail them to you. Everything else FMJ stated is correct. It definitely is an easy swap on an S1.

Swingarm Swap Parts List from ATC.

For the rear slipper fender the 99 M2 part is ideal if you don't mind plastic. I ran with no rear gaurds for a while, but my bike has spewed the oil cap 3 times so I leave them on now.

Cool guys. I ain't running a fender, so that's not a issue.
I plan on removing all unnecassary tabs, and powder coating it black when done. I think it'll look pretty decent when it's done.

Your choice, but get a Banke screw on filler cap from American Sport Bike. It's on my Christmas list.

Got one already! I've been running no fender or guards since the first week i bought my bike in '98.

No issues with oil pukage as of yet, with over 20,000 miles.

Sooner, the heat shield is a standard 98 version, stainless that has been polished. Al Lighton's idea, Rocket sent me the shield as my original was scratched beyond repair. Typical Badweb bruther stuff.

The swingarm used on all models were the same. For a 1999, the same swingarm was used on all the models (X1, M2 and S3).

Looking to swap my swingarm and replace my isolators soon, and I've been trying to research as much as I can so it goes as smoothly as possible. The one thing I've seen over and over is that the bolt that holds the shock to the clevis on the swingarm needs replaced with a longer one, but I can't find much information about the bolt. I did eventually find that it needs to be an M12x50mm bolt. The thing I haven't seen any kind of information on, is what kind of bolt should this be? I know that has to be an extremely high tension area with all the weight of the bike transmitting through that bolt every time you hit a bump and the last thing I need it to do is shear off. I've never been 100% sure on which bolts are good for what. Do I need to try to find a stainless.... grade 8... something entirely different?
