Hello Im new to the world of BUELL.I bought a used S3 with 5000 miles on it. The problem started after I filled up with some X brand gas and not the good stuff. It pings and knocks all the time. I did install a Jagg oil cooler to help the temp and after talking with the previous owner he gave me a electric fan kit that he bought and never installed. What can I do with the knocks and pings. My dealer just told me thats Buell!

First don't use brand X gas. 92 or higher octane. Try to run through that tank as quickly as you can. Don't lug it, keep the rpms up above 4000 and be gentle on the throttle.

Second, check the plugs, make sure they say 10R12's not 6R12's. This will help, A LOT.

Third, install the fan, it helps a lot, particularly when you are in traffic. It also cools off the bike when you stop.

Fourth, go to the dealer and have them check the Throttle Position sensor setting, the ignition timing, the Adaptive Fuel Value (AFV) and maybe check for intake air leaks.

dump the bad gas and run it in your lawnmower/car/boat/aircraft, er, chech that last, not your plane, but get it outa yer Buell

timing, right plug, proper jetting (or FI joojoo, in your case) will stop the pinging . . . these motors may be closer to the pre-ignition threshold than others, but they do NOT ping and rattle as a matter of course

Thanks for all the info !! I put in a new set of plugs tonight (the right ones) IT had the 6R12s in it. I took it for a short spin around the block(its raining) went to 125 mph no pings! Still seems a little under power though.What should the gap be on the 10s? I also talked with another person at the dealer today (a fellow Bueller)and he said try the plugs and then bring it in and they would tune it up for me. Alex that was cool meeting you guys at bike week also. What did ya think of the stage show? We should get together sometime and do some riding or hang out and bring me up to speed on Buells. Glad to hear the plugs worked. I'm interested in knowing who said 'That's just Buell', but I don't really want to know. I'm headed out to CA at the end of the week for the Ride Across America I was telling you about, but I'll be back in August, and I'll show you a few of the favorite stomping grounds we go on. Glad to hear the bike his doing well.

The stage show was good, except for one of the finalists... Wow. Too much. Shoot me an email with your number, I'll give you a call when I get back in town! It's great to have another Bueller in town! I have lots of great stuff about Buells, we'll sit down over a cold beer some evening and talk.

I had the same problem with my X1. The race chip finally cured my pinging problem. It help out with the power also.

Good thing it was caught early enough. I converted my X-1 to carb and had some pinging problems at top end. I had been backing the timing out gradually to see if I could get it to stop. Finally I had a head bolt come loose and blow out the head gasket. Now I am rebuilding the top end of my motor. I really only need new gaskets, but what the heck, what the wife don't know won't hurt too much (until she finds out, he he he). Looks like its time for those new larger race valves, new valve guides from Nallin, new springs from Zippers, you get the point. Should have it back up soon. Almost have all the parts, so Jose, if you want to see what makes your S-3 tick, come on over and we'll yank it down.

Ok Guys i took my bike in and had the timing and TPS set. The timing was out 13 degrees. IT runs strong now !! Thanks for all your help! Now for the next issue. When I went to pick it up at the dealer it wouldnt start, the switch burnt up( i knew this was coming I had problems it before) they didnt have one in stock. So I called the wife and had her bring my tools to the dealer and I tore it apart and hot wired it got me home and can ride if I have to.THanks Chuck !!(he's a mechanic that stayed on his own time and gave me his professinal opinion) The new switch from Buell is $190 are there and after market switches around ? The dealer told me that no other Harley switch would work but it has Harley and a part # right on the back of my old switch? How many other are using the toggle switch system?

You mean the ignition switch itself?

you can buy an aftermarket ignition switch for a lot less, but then you'll need a key to start the bike and the old key for the steering lock/bags/rear seat.

I think the $190 includes new locks for everything

Check with the dealer to see if they can get Buell/HD to sell you the individual ignition switch keyed to your existing barrel key, they will do that for people, I have done it twice already....

Got her torn all apart. Found the cylinder stud (where the bolt came loose) is a little mushroomed at the top. So I'll be replacing the studs and bolts as well. If you are interested in learning a new trick, come on over. My heads are being worked and should have them back next week. Then I can put everything back together and take her for a test spin.

Like Jose said, you can get just the barrel by itself. Harley really only uses like 4 or 5 different barrel keys, most (from what I remember) of the switch housings are the same, just a different pins for the key. If you have/know your key code, take it to any HD dealer and ask for just that switch for your code. Or wait until DaveS get's back from vacation and contact him at Appleton HD. You'll see his posts all over Badweb.

Hey guys I went and picked up a switch from a local HD custom shop. Its not the same as the OEM but a few wire ends and it works good. It does use a regular key. It only cost $14 ! Im going to check on the OEM switch but this one will get me thru till then .
