I spotted a 2000 Buell X1 race bike in a youtube video that was recently uploaded. https://youtu.be/gZU9m_sTrjM?t=472

Would a true race bike have PM wheels? I'd figure they would at least stick to the Castalloys or try to round up some Marchesini? |

Absolutely could! Wheel Straitening shops have to retrue race bike wheels all the time. In fact a factory new wheel will be in better condition after leaving such shop with LESS RUNOUT. Both wheel types are used in racing. |

But why run heavier wheels when there are lighter factory options available? Especially on a "race bike". Castalloy alloy wheels and Marchesini alloy wheels came stock from the factory. Interesting boomerang on this one as well. (Message edited by 34nineteen on February 03, 2021) |

I believe the PM wheels are actually lighter. Additionally the rear PM wheel is 0.5" wider. Should also be easier to straighten than a cast rim. |

It also doesn't look like it's an overly aggressive race bike, looks like it was more of a café racer track bike project, so I doubt they were too concerned with them. |

I believe the PM wheels are actually lighter. I thought the PM's were heavier. Marchesinis being lightest, followed by CastAlloys. Agreed on the other 2 points. Maybe they were willing to forgo the weight for the width and ability to repair easier?} |

I have a question about race bike provenance. A local dealer here has what looks like an S1 race bike being billed as a "former D.O.M. racer". I confess I've never heard of this race. I am familiar with the Battle Of the Champions race, using identically prepared S1s, but as I understand, it was an exhibition event and not a race series. Can anyone shed light on the D.O.M. race reference? |
