Sometimes when the I take off from a stop there is a squeal , much like I chirped the rear tire, but I didn't.
It seems to disappear after a few starts.
I assume this is the clutch, however it seems to be operating fine.
I did remove the spring plate and install an extra plate in there.
Any ideas what this is?
Is it a problem?

I did remove the spring plate and install an extra plate in there.

Mine's done it - depending on how I release the clutch - ever since adding the necessary plates to get rid of the grenade, I mean spring, plate. It's actually hard to not get it to squeal.

Is it a problem?

Not in my opinion,

Johnod:

Since you have received my CLUTCH PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT UP-DATE here is a clarification for you ...

When you do this the CLUTCH is now the same as the BIG DOLLAR aftermarket clutches in that you must learn to use your clutch all over again ...

Meaning you have to let it out slower or you will get a little tire spin(squeak)or you will just leave a couple of feet of tire rubber on the pavement ...

WILL UP-DATE MY PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT HELP "INFO" WITH BOLDER PRINT SO NO ONE ELSE MISS UNDERSTANDS THEY HAVE BASICALLY A RACING CLUTCH AFTER WARDS ...

Lafayette, I'm not spinning the tire.
I get the same squeal on gravel, and you can only squeal the tires on gravel in the movies. : )

Your clutch info was very good by the way, as has all the other info you've sent me.
So thank you once again for all of it.

My S1 does it as well from time to time since I tossed the spring plate. Its definitely not my rear tire spinning. That being said, its so minor that I've learned to ignore it. The clutch feels fine and the tranny is shifting great.

This is your problem...

Your front pulley has gotten loose. Check your front pulley splines. If you've been riding with this issue for a while, the splines are probably razor thin.

You will need a new pulley, a new plate, pulley nut, and two new screws.

Torque to initial 50 ft/lbs, then put a line from the nut to the pulley. (I think the FSM states that it should be under 45 degrees counter rotation to get to 90) Finish torque to 90 ft/lbs. Check the FSM to make sure that is correct.

Remember, the large nut tightens COUNTER-clockwise!

Parts will set you back about $200.

No that's not it.

Pulley has been off recently and is fine, and replaced stock nut with big nut already.

Well, I thought it was coming from the clutch area too...it wasn't.

Did you follow the FSM, to al t, when you replaced and re-torqued the pulley nut?

Here is a simple test to ensure your front pulley is not worn (splines)...

By the way, you WILL have to buy a new pulley nut $6 for this test, (as the factory white Loctite will be fractured) and maybe two new screws $3. You may also need a new plate as it gets damaged if your pulley is damaged.

Pull the screws, back off the nut one rotation, then see if you can rock the pulley front to back (rear wheel to front wheel). If the pulley isn't tight, then your pulley splines are probably damaged and the pulley will need to be replaced.

I thought it was said to be something with the belt? That split second the belt pulls tight??? Does it still do it when hot?

Yes, cold or hot, the belt will squeal if the front pulley is coming loose.

Just a thought here....My old lady had the same problem on her 97 Sporty. I had all the same things running through my mind as I'm seeing on this post. Before I got too deep I reminded myself to try the simpler things first. I ended up removing the belt and the noise disappeared. Granted it didn't eliminate the possibility of anything related to the drive sprocket, but one step at a time. The belt did have a minor amount of wear along the edges with small bits of Kevlar fibers protruding out of the edge of the belt. I brought the belt to the dealer, and the shop guy said, ''You don't need no belt. Take that home and scrub the sh*t out of it, and the pulleys too, and I guarantee your problem's solved." I gotta admit I was doubtful, but upon closer inspection it turned out the belt, pulley and sprocket were coated with a film of greasy dirt, especially in the valleys of the pulley and sprocket along the sidewall. In some of the grooves it looked like black scabs, and those took a LOT of elbow grease to remove even with solvent. Probably worth mentioning the rear wheel was also a hair out of alignment. I removed the belt, pulley and sprocket and spent a couple hours scrubbing and re-scrubbing with a bucket of Simple Green and a brush until everything looked like new, then put the belt, pulley and sprocket back on, and carefully aligned the rear wheel. I was amazed..the Harley guy was right, problem solved! And even more amazing was the dealer didn't try to sell me a belt I didn't need.
