The above East Troy bike had nothing to do with defenders ... More to so with politics and our coffee drinking buddy with whom we had an "arrangement"

In retrospect ...... We should also have provided Trooper McClennan a bike also. I'm sure Marty would agree.

Court,

I wish I had that special 'arrangement'. I got so many exceeding the posted limit awards in and around East Troy - most of them on my own bike, even...

Dean,

VERY NICE FIND!!!

Joe,

All (S3T) Defenders were triple white - Pearl White bodywork, white frame, white wheels. Of the 15 "White" 1998 S3T's built, the East Troy Police bike above was the only one with Nuclear Blue frame and wheels. Exclude the ETPD bike and take away the 12 Defenders, that means there are 2 "White" 1998 S3T's that remain somewhat of a mystery... And that S2 Defender above is not just 'an' S2 Defender, it's 'THE' S2 Defender - which in all reality, was likely just an S2 that was laying around with some lights and graphics thrown at it. But you can definitely see the lineage of the S3T Defender graphics from it.

To anyone who will listen/take note/has a horse in this race,

I've had about every electronic malady possible affect me recently interfering with my communication - internet out, Yahoo Mail 'upgraded' their app recently causing it to to be as reliable as the local weather forecast - but the good news is that I am back up and running. Well, that Yahoo Mail app - it seems to improve ever so slightly every time that I send Yahoo negative feedback, but those improvements are very short-lived (however the issues only seem to appear when I'm relying on 4G when I'm away from my home WiFi).

Just as my internet became live again last night, I got a followup Email from the CEO of NiteRider. Some of his news was good, some not so good. To try and summarize his response:

- It would require the design new electronics in order to get the wig wag function. Unfortunately NiteRider will not be able to support the development and manufacture of the new electronics. Everything NiteRider does nowadays is LED, where the lights in question were Halogen. (This is completely understandable and most likely good from the cost standpoint, but it means that the lights would have to be steady ON - unless someone can get creative or has some resources available to them to figure that detail out...)

- They do have some dual beam housings.

- They do NOT have any single beam housings.

- They have many red lenses in inventory.

- They do NOT have any blue lenses in inventory.

- They do have 'a large quantity' of the 12 Volt Halogen Lamps in inventory that were used to make the Buell lights originally.

So in the end, they can't supply the complete light system, but they can definitely supply some of the parts that made up the lights.

I have some follow up questions to ask and I'll try to get a feel for the costs of the components at the same time, but that probably won't happen for the next day or two.

So, after hearing the latest from NiteRider, what are everyone's thoughts?

If the two-light heads are two-circuits (i.e. each lamp has its own power supply)...I can build a wig-wag. It will be an external unit but should be easy enough to incorporate into the system.

Lenses (for show only, of course) can be made with dyes, or tinted paints. Last option would be stage lighting gel - basically colored cellophane that goes just inside the lens.

I...would almost rather have LED. Original manufacturer, simply updated (and more easily sustained/repaired) technology. Not 100% "original" but...the majority of these bikes are going to be resurrected/updated anyway. But if the only "missing piece" (no pun) is a blue lens here and there...chasing them down should be easy enough. Even if its a matter of casting a mold for a red lens...and making some out of blue plastic.

I will say - if I build wig-wag circuits, they will be FAR from original. But they will be built with the assumption that they will be kept out of sight as well. The plan there for me is, I will compile a component list...schematics...and either offer to build systems for owners, or simply forward the information so they can build their own.

What about controls? Buttons/switches? Also, mounting brackets for the housings - the "visible stuff". I'd be interested to hear how complete a package they could scrounge up, and what components would be missing or updated. And, how many packages / bikes they could scrounge bits for...

I've used a Galls wag-wag module on my car . . . might be an easy solution.

On the partial light kit I found, I am missing a blue lens as well. As far as the power supply it has a single power inlet with a small circuit board inside the light housing, and mine has a different light control than what was pictured originally installed. Mine has variable flash speeds built into the control, I opened the control and it has a board in it as well, mine doesn't work though, I believe it controls the lighting ground, the ground is going into the control but not coming out. At this point in time I don't want to invest much money into the police lighting.

I was thinking galls or code3...I use them on my brakelights on the s2, Ulysses, and s1w. The trick will be grouping the lights, figuring total channels needed, and routing/dressing the harness.

And figuring out controls/buttons.

Just for reference, the set that I have are the dual beam halogen lights if you guys need them for anything. I don't know if any of you guys have a set of them.

Not light related, but definitely Escort Vehicle related...

I was elated with what I received in the mail today:

Blue text air cleaner warning label

It's amazing what punching part numbers into a Google search will turn up. The website said that they had 4 in stock, so I placed my order for all 4. They were on vacation when I placed the order, so the wait was a little more excruciating. Then after they got back from vacation, they called me. Of course, the conversation started out "Our actual inventory is a little off...", and I feared the worst. But they did have 2 of the labels with blue text!

Now the next challenge is finding the blue text EPA label L1101.G Unfortunately my luck with the internet hasn't been quite as good with that part number yet. I've consulted with an ace Buell parts guy and he can't match it up to a "...-98Y" part number (which is the type of number that I found the air cleaner warning labels with).

Sorry for the interruption...back to the lights,

Yeah, back to the lights? Haven't heard a peep in forever. Need to follow up on that when I get back home.

However, for some news that will please all Escort Bike owners, I met with the sign guy who originally did the special reflective red and blue decals today and reviewed the samples I have. He's thinking that he should be able to fill in the holes - what I don't have decals for - from files he has on his computer system.

Also, found some information that will hopefully end up being VERY helpful in getting some of the other decals on the Defender (and other Escort Bikes) recreated!

The end goal is to have the sign guy have the info for each decal kit:
- S3T Defender
- M2 Peace Keeper
- S1W Enforcer
so when a new bike is unearthed, the owner can contact him and get the decals. I expect pricing information for each kit once the sign guy has a chance to review material amounts - and for the S3T Defender there are still some sticking details that need to be squared away before that can happen.

I'm taking care of any costs incurred between now and when the kits are made available. Once the kits become available, they will be ordered directly from the sign guy.

I gotta remember to follow up on the lights...
