im looking to strip the bike down here soon when i get my barracuda out of the garage.

i recall some kind of frame mod so that you can run both style headers. as the old style headers are becoming impossible to find and probably are only going to get harder to find i think i'd like to mod the frame.

I would like to know any other beneficial frame mods as well.

thanks!

I have a spare X1 frame in my garage. You could cut your sub-frame off, weld mounting tabs and build your S1 on the more rigid frame with the side plate for swapping iso's and belts. That won't help with running old, old-school headers though.

I need to run the vin, I bought it from a guy down south, his story sounded plausible so I didn't stress over it.

I haven't heard of modding an early tuber frame that way, but I suppose it could be done. If you want some frame pics, specific to that side of the bike I can snap a few, with my S1 tail on there it may give you a better frame of reference that 99+ plastics might make more difficult.

If it weren't for titling issues, I'd weld an S1 subframe to an X1 frame and put the S1 on the X1's frame. Besides the ability to use the later exhausts, you'd also get a stiffer frame (especially on the left front), ever so slightly more aggressive steering angle (I think 1* difference), and an iso plate that allows changing the drive belt in 20 minutes. And you could add the 4th tie bar that the later tubers came with (dunno if you can still do that easily on the old ones or not).

Right side has a bend in the frame, between the down tube and the headstock, I think the whole lower rail runs an inch or two higher after the bend.

Let me see if I can find some pictures on the web for you. old 'puter is in the shop ans I don't have any pics on the laptop.

S1 frame (slight mod with passenger pegs removed. This photo is if Streetfighter's S1)

99+ Model Year M2 frame, prolly modded subframe to fit the S1 tail, it doesn't really just bolt on there. (This is Sanchez's M2 modified with S1 and XB parts, it was way cool til he crashed pretty bad)

After scrutinizing those pics I don't know how you'd mod the frame on an early tuber to take that header. Clearances are pretty tight, I thought at first you could cut and splice that specific section from another tuber frame. Or fabricate that two foot section of frame with the bend and splice it in... I think having the parts for comparison would help.

My concern from looking at it is the angle of the lower frame tubes and the lugs on the frame mount, I don't know if it's actually lugged there, seems more like a plate gusseted in.

I'd suggest a focused search to the knowledge vault, there should be a specific section for frames, maybe under the chassis header. You might even have to do it the hard way and spend some time just reading through the old threads there.

An X1 frame would not be optimal since it's got the tail where you'd need to weld or mod for lugs to mount your S1 subframe, and it would need some mod to the front, where the tank loops under the retaining bar. I'm thinking maybe a S3 or M2 frame would require less work splicing in the tail, and good to go... and you'd have the stronger built in front left frame where others bolt on or weld in a frame brace on their S1's.

Correction, I took another look, mod to frame to make a tuber tank fit would be to the back of the tank areas.

I did an image search for S1 frame on badweb and there are a lot of examples out there you can do some research that way.

It would be easier, safer, cheaper to take a couple headers and chop them up and make your own you could also make it attach in sections for easier install!
