1997 Buell S3 Just did clutch modification. Replaced primary cover. Bike cranked ran for a bit then stopped. Now starter is actively engaging but bike won't start. Gas tank is full, valve is on. Brand new battery. Is there a wire or something I could have undone somewhere? |

Did you bump the kill switch while messing with it? |

Sounds like you bumped a wire. Retrace your steps and see if something is loose. Perhaps something along the clutch cable? |

Check plugs and plug wires. Check connection to ignition box. Check fuel cap, open it and see if it runs. Could be tank vent is plugged. |

Does that year have a kickstand interlock switch? It may have been bypassed and the wires are still down there (right by the footpeg). It would have been easy to disturb those wires--especially if the person who did it, did a poor job splicing them. |

If starter is engaging but you're not cranking, it SOUNDS like something has shorted, drawing power away. Does the battery drain overnight after a charge? |

THANKS for all the responses! starter is engaging and motor is cranking. charge on battery is above 13V and holding a charge. Battery is always on a trickle charger when in the garage. I do have the M/C on a stand, but held the kickstand switch shut while cranking Also tried taking the gas cap off. just keeps cranking. Going to retrace wires when I get home...still looking...still baffled...it just has to be something very simple I'm overlooking...so keep looking |

9/10 times it what was touched last. but im not feeling that anything with the clutch would do this. still id retrace all your steps with a fine tooth comb. the running then dying sounds like a fuel issue. pull the fuel line off the carb and make sure gas is running threw it, drain and refill carb bowl, then do the "please run" dance. |

Are you absolutely sure you have gas and the petcock is open? Put it on reserve just to make sure. The fact that it started momentarily, then died, makes me question if any fuel is getting into the engine. |

Need to check if it's getting spark. Do what Sparky says - take one of the spark plug cables off its plug and try cranking to see if you get a jolt. (That's why they call me Sparky) If yes, then the spark plug is likely fouled or it's not getting gas. No, I'm kidding. Do what Sparky does not what he says: Take one of the spark plugs out and see if it sparks against the engine while cranking [not while holding it]. If no sparks, make sure the RUN/OFF switch is set to RUN and, if so, then troubleshoot ignition wiring. |

"sounds like a fuel problem" BINGO! Started to trace fuel supply Slosh tank..sounds and looks like gas is in there Remove fuel line from fuel valve at tank. Small trickle from carburetor side. Move valve to "run" side...drip drip Get 5 gallon fuel can...Holy Cow and DUH it didn't have "enough" gas. Since my trip odo was broken I've been using a Sigma digital speedometer for trip info and it read 5 miles... So I ASSUMED :-( ...slosh in tank + sigma read out = gas not a problem WRONG! Thanks everyone for input, I really can't believe how red my face is in embarrassment.. REVz |

done that, been there!! ran out on the road one day coasted up to the pump thought i had reserve gas NOT!! |

Oh man! I've been there so many times. Mostly with my old sporty with the peanut tank. Usual scenario: Ride into garage, turn off gas. Next day, attempt to start bike on sidestand. Fires right up then dies after some time. Oh great. Here we go. Points cover off. Feeler gauges out. 20 minutes later, finding nothing wrong there eventually find out that tank was a bit low and petcock was above the level of the gas with the bike on the stand. Odo indicated that I had at least 30 miles left before reserve but that's on a level tank! |

Maybe it was the angle of the bike up on your stand that sloshed the gas away from the feed, Revz. |
