Alright here it is. I went on deployment and just got back. Went to start the X1 and take it out for a spin but got no love, here are the symptoms:

Tail light comes on
Headlight does not
Speedometer sweeps when key turned on
Tachometer does not sweep when key turned on

Hit the start switch, and if you guessed I got nothing you are absolutely correct.

Not real sure what the issue might be, if anyone has any ideas please shoot them my way.

Thanks in advance
Jimmy

Welcome back! Thanks for your service.

Not to insult you but was the battery on a trickle charger? Have you charged the battery since being back? It doesn't take much to run the lights but turning the motor over is a different story. I would replace the battery or atleast charge it, try to jump it off and go from there.

I would wager that your battery has turned into a block of wood.

It's also possible that some corrosion is present in the fusebox and that's worth checking out too. WD40 is your friend : )

Welcome back. Check battery. Check fuses. Check grounds.
It sounds like a low charge problem.

I don't recall either the speedo or the tach ever "sweeping" when ignition is turned on.

My tach & speedo needle "swept' when I lost the rotor & stator

Picking up a new battery today, will let you all know the outcome.

Thanks

"My tach & speedo needle "swept' when I lost the rotor & stator"

I know the tach does a semi-sweep motion when you run the tachometer diagnostics via ECMSpy but this is a first time I hear about the tach/speedo sweeping on an X1 under "normal" conditions. XB and 1125s do it as part of start up diagnostics. Regarding the original question, my money is also on the battery.

A short story long: My rotor/stator ceased working so my X1 was on battery electrical power only. The battery discharged whilst I was riding. The tach & speedo needles danced all over the faces of the gages until the bike died completely.
This indicated to me that a discharged battery will produce the needle sweep condition.

Thanks for the advice, hopefully it is just a battery, don't really want to replace a stator right now. But if thats what I have to do, I will get it done.

Thanks
Jimmy

I've not seen my tach or speedo sweep ever....unless under heavy acceleration
Not when turning the ign key on
Not when in diag mode on ecmspy

Not that you all mention it, mine never did it before. This is kinda weird, just went and checked and yep it is sweeping just like my XBs do.

"Not when in diag mode on ecmspy"

It doesn't sweep across the entire dial - just enough to show that the tach is responding to the diagnostic trigger. Going by memory I think it jumps up to 3K and back down.

My 99 X1 does no sweep at all. Kinda weird.

I thought that was just an XB series thing.

Jimmy

If I had the money I would buy it but I say keep it and ride it. It is the ONE that turned you onto Buells.

Yeah I would like to but, to many bikes just setting in the garage. Got the Uly, 1125, S1W, X1, Kawasaki Vulcan 2000, TTR-90, CR250R and a CRF150F. Got to free up some space and quit paying so much insurance.
