A couple of things needed

A) this thread was started in the quick board
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/621307.html?1300307713
If you have any experience/opinions please let me know

B) on the steel tuber swingarms, how long are they from swingarm pivot to the end? I am looking at this extended one, but not sure how much longer it is over stock. Looks like 5-6 inches added in, but not sure.
I have a later aluminum arm on my stock bike, so I cant measure mine to check.
Thanks

C) The swingarm Im looking at is pretty bare, just the arm, no bushings or the axle adjuster thing at the rear - where could I get some of those?
And is it just swingarm bushings in the arm? Anything else in there? Best place to buy those parts?

This stuff is all new to me, sorry for newb questions

Seriously guys, thanks for any help you can offer me on any of these questions

Also - just to clarify - all of the swingarms have the same specs at the swingarm pivot, right?
I was thinking they could all interchange pretty easily, wanted to confirm that as well

Hey Garrett,
The old steel swingarms are pretty much the same as what's on your bike as far length and dimensions. You would have to get the longer axle. I took the aluminum one off of mine and went to one off of an M2 and it bolted right up but it this one doesn't have the bearing in it then you would have to get those and I couldn't tell you for sure anything on that.
I don't know where to get all the parts for it new but I have an S1 swingarm you can have for $40 + shipping and you can take the bearing and stuff out of it.

Another route you can take if you don't trust the quality of that swingarm is taking it to CMF in Mount Pleasant, NC he did an increible job on my swingarm, and if you are only wanting 5-6 inches you probably wouldn't need bracing and he does good work for descent price, just a thought. I could get you in contact with him or get it done and mail you the swing arm or give it to you at The Rock.

The tuber swingarm bearings are the same as in the steering head
the bearing set number is: L44643/610/Q or L44643/44610
and is available at any bearing supplier

the length of a 98 s1 swingarm is 4450 mm from the hart of pivot to the end swingarm (minus the axle adjuster)

And maybe it helps if you post a picture from the swingarm you have.

willie - They are only asking 100 bucks for the arm. It does have bracing. I think I'm going to get it. I think.
I havent found any information on the guy other than some posts different places and a few pics of his S1. I am PRETTY SURE this is the same arm, I doubt many are painted/coated this same color.

As for longer axle - care to elaborate? The aluminum ones are shorter? How much shorter?

I appreciate your offer, am going to check with a local bearing supplier and see how much new ones are. American Sport Bike has the bearings and seals etc pretty cheap. And while I appreciate your offer, I might have to pass for right now. But I'll let you know.

Brother - when you say the 'hart of the pivot' do you mean the center of it or what? We measured from the middle of the pivot hole to the end and it was about 23 inches. I'll have to pull a calculator up in a few to see what that makes in CMs
Thanks for the part# on the bearings

here are the only three pictures I've found of his bike online, and I didnt think to take any yesterday at the shop

You can't beat a $100 and if you end up not using it I'm sure you could get rid of it at the track.

One thing to consider is the weight! I know you run the SE if you are pushing to get your dial in now, this going to easily add 20lbs. I didn't think there was that much of a difference but the steel arm is a lot heavier without the extension then once you add the extension and bracing it adds up. But if you go to a slick they are lighter, less weight on the drivetrain.

I can not tell you exactly how much longer but its only about maybe an 3/4" to an 1" longer. You can find them on ebay. I bought one from a member on here that had a swingarm, motor mount, axle, and random he just wanted to get rid of for cheap.

One more thing to consider is the longer chain. I recommend the 530ZZZ chain it is expensive but you get what you pay for. Consider the extra weight on your drivetrain for a longer chain. I use to run the 530DRZ2 and 120 links of it weighs more than 150 links of the 530ZZZ.

Ok
Im going to buy tomorrow

I'll try to download the picture and host them myself, or post them here or something
I'll do it tomorrow morning, Im beat tonight

I guess another important point to make is the tensile strength. You can get light chains cheaper but find out the tensile strength the last thing you want is to make it to the finals and snap a cheap $40 china made chain : ) That is why you pay the extra $$ for the lighter 530ZZZ that has 11,000 tensile strength (more than the 530DRZ2) and weighs less.

Brother - thanks again for the part numbers, I called a local place and they have both those #s in stock, for the pair its 18 bucks (two of each, the race and the bearing)

I'd have never thought to check locally for the products
Not trying to stay away from a board member, but thats over ten bucks savings on top of whatever shipping cost would be.
Thats nice.
Especially when all of this stuff sort of nickle and dimes you
100 for the arm (if I do get it, pretty sure I will monday)
120 or so for a chain
30 for bearings
another 10 for seals
etc etc etc
the stuff adds up quick

willie - how do you figure how long you need the chain to be?
Man, I found the EK ZZZ chain on dennis kirk....holy crap, 200 bucks!
Is that how much you paid for yours? know of a better deal?

Here is a chain length calculator link;

http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/chainlength.html

I got mine from amazon and yes it is expensive. I just took a look on amazon and saw a 150 link on there for $163 you may be able to get away with a 140 or 130 link use the calculator and see. It also depends on your gear ratio, if your running a 19 (like most drag bikes) and a small back gear <50 130 links might be enough. I will let you be the judge of that. 150 link was enough for my 12 inch extension if that helps.

After talking to some others, I've been recommended several different chains
the ZZZ, EK DR chain, and the RK DR chain.
The ZZZ is lighter per 100 links than the other two, but the RK is lighter than the EK (dr).
The weight, per 100 links, isnt that drastic from the ZZZ and the RK chain.
The cost savings is. About 60 bucks.
I think I'll go with the RK chain.

It does suck, the cost of everything, it all stacks up quick. But I guess you got to pay to play...

Since the topic is already on swingarms...

What is the diameter of the pivot bolt shaft?

Thanks.

cool. What swap are you doing? Steel to aluminum? Take some pictures of the swap for me. I have not taken a swing arm off yet, and I'm interested to exactly how the iso bolts are torqued down into the pivot.
