I have to replace the 5th gear bearings (the small roller bearings inside of the bore ). I went on line to find them and found that I had a choice of 35051-89 or the reved 89A version. BEARING TRANS OE#35051-89 1106-0009 NEEDLE BEARING, PRE-LUBE 35051-89A So my question is, should I get the A version, as it is the latest or will this not work with an S2, or do I need both? Also, getting those bearings out of their has been a real chore, I can't wait till I have to install the new ones. Any help would be appreciated. |

Put them in the freezer for an hour before you drop them back in. Get the A version, new is usually better, IMO. |

I ground down a deep socket to use as a driver on my S1. I have an S3 and do not believe that the procedure is different. I did stake the bearing cage in after finding that it has started to walk and pushed the seal out of 5th gear. |

Thanks Rich and Eric, by the way, how do you 'stake' the bearing, as that is what got me in there in the first place. My outer bearing walked about 1/2 way out of the 5th gear and the previous owner's 'fix' was taping hard rubber shims to the inside of the pulley cover to keep it contained. |

I sharpened a punch and flame hardened the point. Staked the inside edge on the end of 5th gear just enough to keep the cage from walking out again. Don't know why they didn't just put a snap ring in to keep it in place. It hasn't moved in approx 15K miles |
