but when i crack it oil pressure drops to nothing for a sec then comes back up What if you rev it up slowly? Think about it this way. In the sense of what goes up must go down. the volume of the cylinders moving down inside the case on a quick throttle rip and push a ton of air out real quick they also move up real quick and if the PVC or umbrella valves are working correctly it will put a quick vacuum into the cases till the small diameter hoses catch up. So for the quick second the pressure acts like it drops. But that is just a small theory... |

WELL, lets see now ??? My FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL says: At idle speed(950-1050 RPM), oil pressure will vary from 7-12 psi ... AND, at 2500 RPM, oil pressure will vary from 10-17 psi ... You must remember you have a roller bearing rods, not inserts ... SO, at idle you are "AOK" and with 25-30 psi you should be on the LOOK OUT for THE SPEED COPS because you are probably turning 3500 to 4000 RPM ... "RIDE SAFE NOW" !!! After my motor build (X1) and a new check ball valve at the oil filter mounting location, The oil light flickers, Until revved just a hair then it goes out. It comes right back when the idle dips down again. So i opted for the Uly oil pump and bronze drive gear and it is no better. I bought the Uly pump because i wanted to upgrade this part of system. And not to diagnose this problem. I did notice this only happens when the bike is very hot as opposed to just warm or cold. |

Since it sounds like your pressure is good at the proper RPM's, it may just be your oil sending unit that is going bad. I've had them fail before. I think they are just $25 to replace... |

Daveogl: Here is a couple of things you should do to UP-DATE your your 97: Replace the -88A oil drive gear to a PN 26391-06 ... UP-DATE your oil pump to a PN 26357-02B because the OEM -91 oil pump will load up the bottom end when you run hard and back off ... Also UP-DATE your CLUTCH by removing the SPRING PLATE(aka GRENADE PLATE) PN 37977-90 replacing it with two steel ans one friction plates ... If you need additional "INFO" on the above, just PM me so that "i" can get your e-mail address and the "INFO" will be sent to you ... |
