I have been thinking of replacing my '99 oil pump gear with a new one. I believe this was an update on the newer X1? Looking through my manual, its says NOTE: Oil pump can be removed with engine in frame and without removing gearcase cover. Looking on american sport bike, it says Note: you must remove one rocker box and put the other cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke to remove the cam cover. is this needed? I ask because i have my rocker covers off now to powdercoat and install XB covers..... I just didnt want to tackle the pump gear right this second... but i figure if i do have to remove the rockers, guess i should do it now.... |

yes the cam cover has to come off to get to the drive gear back there. i would do it now, if you have the rocker boxes off anyhow! |

Oil pump can be removed from engine without gearcase removal, but the drive gear is separate from the pump. |

Before you do that, find Reepicheep's nice pictorial on gear failure and replacement. You can pull the pump from underneath and view the gear. If it's showing uneven wear like you'll see in the pics you've got some work to do. If the drive gear looks like it's in nice shape, don't fix it! |

Pony: Manual is correct, oil pump can be removed without pulling the cam cover. Once you've got the oil pump out, you can inspect the oil pump drive gear. The oil pump drive gear is not on the oil pump, it's on the end of the crank and to change the gear out, you have to pull the cam cover. rt |
