Been nursing this oil light deal on my original owner 99 S3 with 22K miles. Comes on when under acceleration and flickers a bit between 3-4K. Full on throttle and above 4K no light. I replaced the switch at the filter. Cleaned the ball valve at filter. I am guessing an oil pump issue, so am not riding till I get it. Any suggestions? Thanks, dan |

Pull the sender and plumb in a mechanical gauge, its the only sure way to find out whats going on. |

Original oil pump drive gear? Or updated bronze gear? |

+1 on the oil pressure gauge. It's the only way to tell for sure. |

The wire from the sender probably rubbed through to ground somewhere. When you hit the gas hard, the torque reaction makes the engine move a bit on the rubber mounts. Feel up the wire from the sender, paying close attention to any areas where it comes close to metal engine cases or frame rails. |

Good stuff, thanks. I was thinking of replacing my clock space with a gauge. Who needs a clock? I'll get a closer look at the wire as well, to see if it's grounding. FYI, original drive gear. I've had the bike since new. |

Good news. I pulled slack out of the sending unit wire, and re-routed the path to release some tension. That was the trick! Still going for a gauge however. That's a rocking dash Ebutch! I've got CF to replace the plastic bits except the dash. Seeing your pic has me thinking I better go that direction. Gauge install is nice as well. Thanks for the input, would have responded sooner, but I've been doing some carefree ridding. |

Carefree ridding? I rid my cares too, when I'm on the bike. |

I guess we're off topic now. Right. Checked with American Sport Bike, no more CF dash. I think I passed on buying back in the day, cause they were not "real" CF. Looks good though. The escam unit has a funky look to it. |

These clunkers pump the oil at a lower pressure than a car engine. Finding a sender with a gauge that works with H-D may be difficult. If you find one that works, I would love to know. |

Would an oil pressure gauge from a Harley dresser work? Could probably be found cheap as a swap meet item or take off from someone who converted to Dakota Digital dash gauges. |

I use mechanical Sun automobile oil gauges 0-100 lbs for over ten yrs.rout tube from block to gauge in rubber tubing, windshield washer hose slit with wire ties, gauges in rubber pipe couplings held on to dash with wire ties.Warm engine S2T 24 lbs.S3 17lbs over 2000 rpms lower rpms 9 lbs min.Cold engine 70 to 80 lbs. |

Is it possible to use the existing X1 sender unit and hook it up to a gauge, i.e., use the existing wiring for the idiot light and use a gauge instead? |

Electronic gauge is not accurate as mechanical in lbs,I think. But you Can. |

The original sender is just an on/off type of thing. I'm very surprised that 80lbs is read on a meter! everything I have ever read said that the upp range of pressure was like 45 in a HD engine with the pressure at idle almost nothing. This of course spooked me from experimenting around. |

Nate how close are you to the ocean? In land and unheated shed 15-50 Mobile V and Harley oil gets like molasses-syrup, may-be thicker even 90 lbs at 30F at start-up. |

This is with a Sun-Pro mechanical gauge,o-100 lbs.Used for over ten years on S2T.And on my Ford Truck elec. gauge it just shows pressure and not actual lbs, analog elec gauge.Does not vary like mechanical ga. |

A while back-early last fall? Court had written about the oil gage parts to replace the clock being available from Buell. I thought I saved the numbers but can not find them. Sorry! mark61 |

Thanks Mark, I'll search for the writeup. And no, I don't think everyone has updated the drive gear, myself included. 22K miles. |
