What are the recommended steps to mothball a Buell?

The M2 hasn't been started nor even moved once this year. For all I know there might be a mouse or ant colony living in the muffler. And it is looking like it won't get run again anytime soon. I did manage to get the S2 out a couple of times this summer.

So, I'm thinking I should probably charge up the battery, un-bury it from the corner, and try to get it started sometime in the next month or so. Then maybe fog the cylinders, drain the gas tank, run any gas out of the carb, and then slip it back into its little corner of the garage and re-bury it.

Am I missing anything?

I've been busy with a job loss, working temp status again, and going to school a couple of nights a week to hopefully make myself look a little less unemployable. All this added up to little ride time, even less mechanic / maintenance time, and no funds for much of anything.

Throw up your input on mothballing a bike, thanks.

You can use a fuell stabilizer so you don't have to drain out the gas and dry up your gaskets and seals.

Mix in Sta-bil or something of the sort, run for a few minutes to get it into the carb and then shut it down, prolly a good idea to fog the engine as you intend if it's going to continue to sit though...

How old is the oil?

I wonder if you can fog inside the primary too, to keep the tranny from rusting?

Sta-Bil is one solution but, for extended storage of several months or more, I like to put some 2-stroke oil in the fuel as pre-mix, then run some of it through the bike, then drain the rest.

That leaves a thin film of 2-stroke oil on carb jets and passageways that prevents corrosion and it will keep gaskets and o-rings in good shape. Also, it cleans right out when fresh gas is put in the next spring.

The float bowl has a nice drain for that purpose so there is no need to "run dry", etc.

Mike, you gotta get that M2 out and clean the cobwebs... for real!

I never winterize my M2. I fill the gas tank and park it for the winter. I usually start it about once every month or two. I would suggest it might be worth it to you to not bury it but rather place it somewhere you can get to. It would be a shame to let it got to waste.

Yeah I hear you, but four cubic feet of stuff don't fit into a two cubic foot box. ; )

I'm working on it though.

Thanks for the suggestions, will use them. I've got some outboard gas from last year ....

Maybe I'll just convert it into a snowcat.
