a friend of a friend owns a shop porting heads, said he can cut me a good deal (i did the head on my car) and im wondering what would be the difference between the stock head and thunderstorm heads if both were ported out... stock thunder xb all ported out with new oversized valves. is there a difference? | ||

I know tstorm heads have a 15* squish band, and I think that your stock lightning heads have a 10* squish band and the XB are flat, but don't quote me on the last two. Out of all three of those stock, I believe the XB heads will breath the best. If it was me, and I was going to get headwork done on whatever heads are chosen, I would go with tstorm heads to get the 15* squish. Out of those 3 options, XB heads are the only ones that will require a different front motor mount so you can save $200 give or take by not using them. | ||

Lightning heads, which you have are flat top. If your going to get headwork done, you can find xb heads cheap enough, and have a 15 degree squish cut into them when you have the work done on them. For the price of heads, i would just look for some cheap xb heads,its not cost effective to rework the lightning heads. Just sell the lightning heads on ebay, some sportster guy will buy them since they are an upgrade to what a stock 03 and earlier sportster runs. | ||

+1 on Guell's comments. I successfully modified a set of S1 heads with the 15 degree cut and sort of a bath-tub chamber that I did myself. The result has not yet been dynoed but it hauls ass nicely. But you could sell the S1 heads and buy T-Storm or XB heads for about the same price and more-or-less break even. | ||

BUELLers: ie: LIGHTENING HEADS IMHO, put XB valves, springs/collars-keepers, valve guides(seals), seats, and redo OEM valve pckets ... Leave the ports alone(except to true up) and you get max torque(grunt) where you ride(RPM Range, ie: legal speed limit) ... (Message edited by buellistic on October 11, 2009) | ||

That's too much coin. For that you could buy new Screamin' Eagle heads (XB heads decked, 0.050 IIRC) and new .010 over XB pistons, and have $100 towards the NRHS billet front mount to hold the heads in place. | ||

V74: Your 1999 M2 already has the same valve head sizes as the XB valves and the valve seats are also same size ... The most work comes from replacing the valve guides and doing a valve job ... All else is just assembly time ... What you get from this is a little better air flow through the ports because of the smaller XB valve stems and a little lighter valve train ... | ||
