Just put a new rear tire on my M2. I have aligned the wheel using the caliper method and think it's pretty close but the belt runs up against the outside of the rear pulley when rolled forward. I have searched the archives and some say it should run in the center and some say it can run to the outside. My Road King manual explicitly says that the belt should run against the shoulder of the pulley but the M2 manual doesn't say that. Does anybody have a definitive answer? I wonder should I fiddle with it enough to get it to run in the center? I didn't notice if it did or did not before taking the wheel off but the belt is in excellent condition.

To me using the caliper or measurement with a metal 6" rule is to get it close. Then I fine tune it to run in the middle of both the front and rear sprockets. Then I get no side wear on the belt. I would do the same with a chain.

I set mine using dial calipers and find that the belt will run to the right rotating the wheel forward and to the left rotating the the wheel backwards.

Trust your caliper measurement and don't worry about where the belt tracks.

the allowable variation for out of square is

1/64 th inch or .0156"

Why oh Why do folks think that a ruler readable to maybe 1/32 is good enough when the FSM specifies using a dial caliper that reads to .001 inch?

Dwardo, the caliper can be mis handled gently rock the inside points in the space to find the center, thats your measurement, once the belt tension is set LOCK the nuts they will not have to be desturbed until the belt is replaced
it seems that the belt does just as JR states it will move to one side wheel rolling one way and the other when reversed

Squaring the wheel by "belt tracking" is not a good idea......

IMO - Your milage may vary...........
