I have a 2000 X1 Lightning, it came with 3 spoke purple rims. I feel like there were three options for the X1 - cast alloy, magnesium, and something else. I'm the second owner of this bike and not a metallurgist, but I'm rebuilding the brakes and repacking the bearings. since the wheels all use different bearings I'm trying to figure out which ones to buy. Any input? Save a noob, save a Buell? |

Should be castalloy wheels. The polished aluminum wheels were PM (Performance Machine) wheels. The S2 and early S1s had Marchesini wheels - visually about the same as the castalloys, but with "Marchesini" stickers on the rim and a scripted "m" cast into the base of each spoke. Starting in '97...all the non-PM wheels went to the castalloy. |

Can anyone recommend the proper cleaner/solvent and grease/lube to use for the axle once it's fully apart? This bike probably hasn't seen any respectable maintenance in 5 years. Guy I bought it from rarely rode it and I have had it parked for over a year. It's 9 years old and maybe 3k-4k miles on it? Is it time for a new belt as well? I'm used to chains and paying attention to their wear and the sprocket's wear, never had a belt bike before. |

I just use anitseize on the rear axle |

I just wipe my axles clean with a rag - no cleaner. The manual recommends anti-seize which is what I use. I've also heard of people using wheel bearing grease without any issues. |

Antiseize on the rear axle and just inspect the belt, I've never heard of one dry rotting but I guess it could be possible. With that few miles on it you should be good to go. |

when you say "antiseize" are we talking just stuff like LocTite anti-seize? |

So I didn't pay a lick of attention to my bearings when I removed them from the rear wheel. My bearing kit has 3 bearings, 1 of which has a different thickness. I assume this one goes on the brake side and not the belt side. Can someone confirm this? I checked the depth to the spacer sleeve and it seems like this is proper. BTW, thanks for the Permatex picture. That was the best possible way to answer my question. |

Your assumption is correct the "odd" bearing is for the rotor side. |
