i have a 96 si and my front brake won't release. if i open the bleeder it will release, but as soon as i use the brake it allmost locks up. i took the handle of thinking that the master cyl wasn't coming all the way back, but it still won't work. any body got an idea where to start on this problem. thanks |

Likely a piece of dirt in the return port of the master cylinder. Could also be the caliper seals, but I'd go with 12mpg as a start. You have been replacing the brake fluid frequently...? |

just contact American Sport Bike and get yourself a master cylinder and caliper rebuild kit. it is a very simple job and is well worth the little bit of cash for new stuff. |

Have you recently done anything to the brake system (new fluid, etc)? I had a big problem with my rear brakes when I added the rearsets to my S1W. It was a bitch to get all the air out of the lines. I'd start with the simplist and cheapest (brake fluid) and then work up from there. |

Jay Probably wouldn't hurt to rebuild the PM caliper while you have the system dry. What does the fluid in the master cylinder look like? |

I think you should rebuild your caliper. It sounds like you may have a bit of brake dust that worked its way into the caliper. The problem will return. |

Sounds like the pistons in the caliper are hanging up and are not retracting enough to release their grip on the rotor. What happens is that dirt/debris can build up behind the pistons, hardening enough to keep the pistons from retracting. I've fixed this problem in the field by literally forcing the pistons back. Take a flat blade screwdriver and position it between one brake pad and the rotor and give it a gentle twist. Then do the same for the other pad. |

Don't take the risk - rebuild the caliper and mc. It will likely happen again - and hopefully not when Murphy is around... |

I have experienced the front brake lockup at speed on I95 still an exciting even after nine years. Joe |
