Now that I read it yea It's kinda rhymie(is that as word?).
My intent was to emulate the S models in appearance. I would paint mine but the color wouldn't work...it's onyx. I've painted the rear fender and it looks good.

Thanks folks.
The exhaust isn't leaking, the blue paint goes a funny light brown colour with the combination of age, heat and rain spray from the front wheel - the front of the headers lower down is same colour. I'm trying to track down some more paint to respray but no one seems to have blue in stock at the moment :{

I have new gaskets already (not sure which part no.)... but the studs are pretty rusty... Thanks for mentioning it, new studs and nuts would probably be a good idea while I have it apart. I should be able to get some this week : )

My bike has race headers which were blue when I got the bike, and I know the bike was sold new with the race system on it but I'm wondering how it ended up blue... Did Buell ever sell the racekit exhaust in blue to match the standard X1W blue headers?

AFAIK the blue header is unique to the WL bikes. I liked that, sorry about the panic then It looked like exhaust leakage.

DOH!!!! Snapped one of the exhaust studs on the rear head trying to get it out... Will try extractor...

Hey tuber-folks, Happy New Year! : D

I was sick over Xmas, so not much got done on X until today. I've had a go at getting the broken exhaust stud out with the extractors, but no joy, it's not budging... Soooooo, at the very least the rear head has to come off so I can take it to my local engine re-conditioner to get it out .

I'm wondering what else I *need* to do and what I *could* do while the head is off, and whether to take the front head off at the same time...

The bike has under 30,000km's on it and was running great before all this happened, so I don't think there is much point putting new rings or anything in it. I think, but I'm not sure, that the rear cylinder base gasket was leaking a little oil. I wouldn't mind painting both cylinders black, but I'd rather have the bike back on the road...

So what I'm trying to say is - does it sound ok to pull just the rear head off, get the stud fixed and put back on with new gaskets? If I replace the cylinder base gasket will I need to hone the cylinder if I'm reusing the rings?

Besides gaskets, are any of the head nuts or bolts items that need to be replaced?

If you hone the cylinder you must use new rings and re-seat them. IMO just replace the gasket and re-assemble.

However if it were mine and I had made it that far I would replace the rings and hone and re-gasket the whole 9. Like my dad always taught me "while your there you might as well do it". Also check your piston skirt for any scuffing.

Yeah, my Dad always *tried *to teach me the same thing, and I'm finally doing most things this way... This time however, I really want to get the bike back on the road, so it's just the base gasket and get the stud out this time.

I started pulling it apart yesterday, need to get another 1/4" allen key to cut down to remove the inlet manifold.

Got the head off the other night and took it to my local engine guy yesterday. It's pretty nasty and he suggested getting another shop to get the stud out with a spark erosion machine, then he'll heli-coil it. Unfortunately the place with the spark erosion machine is still closed, hopefully they're open next monday.
One of the guys at my work had a go at welding a nut on the stud, but it just broke the stud further down...oops...

Oh well, looks like I have a little time to clean and fix a few other things on the bike... : )
