Ok now I'm starting to get a lil worried about this ticking noise from the motor area that I hear around 2100-2600 rpm. I was told from the local Buell/Harley sales rep that its normal for our Buells to be a bit on the loud side. Also the bike is a 99 X1, with the full race package and a forcewinder, nothing else has been changed. Anyways, this noise was apparent when I got the bike in february of this year but was no where near this loud. I am thinking that it is coming for the lifter area but it is hard to tell cause you have to be moving to get it to be pretty loud. The lifters are a bit noisy at a stand still and reving the motor but not as loud as when in motion. Does anyone elses bike do the same thing? I mean this almost sounds as if its metal to metal contact.

Check the primary chain especialy the shoe

the valve train noise would be constant at speed loaded or other wise.

I get a ticking noise on mine. I have the pro air cleaner assembly on it and you can hear the intake on mine at around that rpm. I think that's why they have that tube assembly on the stock A/C to quiet it down.

Cuelbuell, how many miles on the bike? I had a similar problem. First go to a parts store and get for a couple of bucks a motor scope (stethoscope with a long probe ) With one hand cover the muffler with a rag while running to quite the exhaust and move the scope around to try to pin point the sound. The ticking usually gets clear when your on it. In my case the rings had worn enough on the rear piston to slap the jug.I ripped apart after checking that the lifter was pumped up. The clearance was out, honed the jug, ended up boring out, then used 10 over rings. No ticking. While apart did the front.

Miles are lil over 9900. I'm going to check the primary chain cause it does sound like it is coming from real low in the motor. Also I "THINK", lol, that it goes away with the clutch pulled in. I say I think cause it kinda difficult keeping the rpms the same when pulling the clutch in. I also just tried listing to it on the kickstand and reving the motor and could not duplicate the noise. Duno if that helps anyone but its some more info on the prob.

My X1 sounds like a diesel truck because of the lifters. They are louder now that I went to Synthetic oil and have put the pro intake on. I have checked the shoe as well. You should do that first, especially if you think its down low. Now after having it go away with clutch pulled I dont know what to make of that. Oil might also be a good thing to note. I am running SYN3, screamin eagle oil. Went out and checked the primary chain tension while it was still hot and I think it is a lil out of adjustment. Hot the manual says 1/4 to 3/8". and I prolly had close to a 1/2". So I am going to start there tomorrow. Think Im just going to go over the entire bike while I'm at it. Figure just do the 10,000 mile service and get it done with.

XLs are notoriously noisy.

My X1 doesnt really make TOO MUCH noise...

My 08 Sporty on the other hand, is freakin' loud... I attribute that to the smaller tank, etc....

Check your primary....

Give a good listen to the cylinders, compression, and leak down tests...

If all is well.. then, let it roll...

FWIW...

The buell gets Mobil 1, 20/50... no serious noise...

The Sporty, got the HD(to keep records from H/D that I bought their oil on the first change) regular 20/50... LOUD..

This upcoming oil change, Mobil 1 all the way....

A couple things I would check while you are in the primary. Check the crankshaft nut for proper torque. It is a little early but the grenade plate may have failed in the clutch. But you would feel that in the lever and shifting. Probably the chain tension/tensioner. Don't rule out external items like the exhaust and it's mounts. So does the noise vary with engine speed or ground speed? Does it only happen when you ride?

The noise comes mostly in first through fourth gears and always from 2100-2700 rpm. Really doesn't matter on the speed as long as I'm in that rpm range. It does only happen when I'm riding, with this being said it seems like it has to be "loaded" to get it to tick. When I'm doing the 10,000 mile service are there any special tools that I should go pick up to make jobs easier? I also want to put in new iso's, is there anything to make this job easier, maybe a how to some where in here?

You have an X1, isolators arent gonna get any easier than that....

Sorry, a bit off-topic but Chasespeed, how do you like the Sporty? I also have an X1 and have my eyes on a Sportster Roadster. Could you comment on you would compare the two, e.g., ride, performance, etc.?

Well, comparing the Buell to the Sporty is like apples to oranges...

The sporty doesnt have the power, has more weight... doesnt have sufficient brakes... I drag the pipe and side stand, pegs, and a few other things all over the place....

But, I bought a 1200N, went for the low, and mostly blacked out look... all I need to do now, is finish, AND raise the rear an inch or so....

With it only happening when rolling I would Lean toward drive train. Not happening in fifth? Look at the front pulley, trans bearings and belt.

What air cleaner are you running? Like 5liter said, my carbon fiber air cleaner makes a pretty loud clacking noise in the same rpm range you are describing. It was a bit unnerving until I got used to it.

A few things that I have been noticing while riding since I don't have the time to tear into it. Happens mostly when it's really hot. For example, get on it to go to work after it idles for a few min and no noise the whole way to work (15min@65mph aprox 3100rpm). Its hot when I get to work but no noise when I get there. It sits for 4 hrs. then I take it back home, might make noise might not. But when I take it back to work it will make the noise. Another thing that has been noticed is that when it is making the noise and I beat on it and really get into it, the noise will be gone for awhile. Like I said before just a lil info. Cant really tell untill I start tinkering to see what will make any type of difference.

afer reading extensively i have found that down shifting and hammering it is what takes care of this and alot of problems??!?

Mine makes all sorts of noises! I think if it didn't there'd be something wrong with it! : )
When I'm riding if I keep my legs snug on the sides of the tank and frame the noises magically go away....he he
